Mascoma Names Hans van Dijken to Scientific Advisory Board

Mascoma Corporation, a leader in advanced bioconversion products, today announced that renowned microbiologist and yeast researcher Johannes Pieter (Hans) van Dijken Ph.D. has joined its Scientific Advisory Board, further expanding Mascoma’s expertise and innovation in bioconversion technology.

A Professor Emeritus of Industrial Microbiology at the Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands, Dr. van Dijken has been a consultant to Mascoma since 2007, advising on critical yeast technology matters. As a Scientific Advisory Board member, Dr. van Dijken will collaborate with other board members and employees to continue commercialization of Mascoma’s proprietary consolidated bioprocessing (CBP) platform and will provide insight for further bioconversion development and applications.

An expert in microbial physiology and fermentation technology and a renowned yeast researcher, Dr. van Dijken served as the Chief Executive Officer of Bird Engineering BV, an engineering company providing knowledge of biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry and bioprocess engineering, which he founded in 1989. At the Delft University of Technology, his research group discovered the metabolic bottleneck responsible for the inability of yeasts to ferment xylose anaerobically and was the first to engineer a yeast organism capable of fast anaerobic growth on xylose.

The Mascoma Corporation Scientific Advisory Board is comprised of technology leaders with in-depth knowledge of industrial biotechnology, bioprocess engineering, and microbiology. Members provide Mascoma with broad insight into important technical, business, and engineering aspects of the technology and business of converting cellulosic biomass into fuels and chemicals. The Scientific Advisory Board further provides Mascoma’s management team with regular assessments of Mascoma’s approach to technology discovery, development and deployment, reviews technology under development and strategic directions being pursued by the company, and provides feedback on opportunities to enhance Mascoma’s technical position.
