WhereScape, a provider of automation software for modeling, building and extending data warehouses and analytic systems, today announced a new release of WhereScape RED, the company’s flagship automation software that is optimized to fully leverage the Pivotal Greenplum massively parallel processing (MPP) Database. Available immediately, WhereScape RED for Greenplum accelerates time to value for an organization’s Greenplum investment by eliminating hand coding and automating Greenplum development. WhereScape RED for Greenplum requires fewer resources to model, build and deploy a Greenplum data warehouse, creating a simplified infrastructure and dramatically reducing total cost of ownership.
WhereScape RED builds native database objects optimized for Greenplum as well as other analytic appliances such as Netezza and Aster. In addition, RED supports target database platforms such as Teradata, SQL Server, DB2 and Oracle. As an ELT engine, RED can extract data from OLTP systems, flat files and big data platforms such as Hadoop Hive.
WhereScape RED enables practitioners to access source data from multiple environments, create procedural code, scripts, and tables, build cubes, schedule updates, and generate documentation in HTML format, all while maintaining existing BI front-end compatibility.
“Database appliances such as Greenplum have gained tremendous traction in the marketplace as more and more IT organizations are using purpose-built platforms for enterprise data warehousing and advanced analytic tasks,” said Shawn Rogers, Vice President of Research, Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing, Enterprise Management Associates. “WhereScape RED is ideally suited for today’s highly diverse, special-purpose IT infrastructures, enabling organizations to manage their extended data ecosystems.”
Union Bank Using WhereScape to Build Greenplum Data Warehouse
Union Bank, a full-service commercial bank with almost 400 locations, is using WhereScape RED for Greenplum to automate the development of its new Greenplum-based enterprise data warehouse. The Greenplum implementation is the bank’s main focus. However it is also pursuing a parallel development track designed to address an immediate business requirement that is focused on developing a consumer-lending departmental reporting system based on Microsoft Corp.'s SQL Server.
“Our results using WhereScape have been extremely impressive,” said Ryan Fenner, Vice President, Data Solutions Architect, Union Bank. “WhereScape RED enabled us to design, develop, document and deploy a production-ready SQL-Server-based reporting solution in eight weeks that solved a critical and immediate business need. Using traditional data warehouse development methods would have taken us six to eight months.”
Fenner added that Union Bank will use WhereScape RED for Greenplum to migrate the consumer lending reporting system to its Greenplum data warehouse when the time is right. “We view our departmental reporting solution as an interim approach that fits in very well with our strategic direction,” Fenner said. “We built something that solved an immediate business need and which can easily be migrated at very low cost into the Greenplum enterprise data warehouse with minimal additional effort. WhereScape provides a very powerful, repeatable, low-cost way to develop in parallel and with agility.”
“A growing number of our customers and prospects are developing and deploying across a multi-tiered data warehouse infrastructure,” added WhereScape USA President Mark Budzinski. “We are committed to providing Greenplum customers a seamless, end-to-end experience for quickly developing their data warehouse infrastructure as well as to help maximize their use of it. WhereScape RED helps accelerate the development of data warehouses and enables organizations to benefit from them in less time, with less money, while mitigating risk resulting in fully documented implementations.”
WhereScape Knows Greenplum
WhereScape RED “knows” all Greenplum objects—including views, distribution keys and append-only tables, and utilizes Greenplum’s rich feature set to build native Greenplum objects, document them and schedule data to be loaded. RED’s open metadata architecture is stored in database tables for easy access, and integrates with external testing and source control tools.
WhereScape RED works seamlessly as an ELT (extract, load and transformation) using the Greenplum GPLOAD bulk load utility, the fast method for loading data into Greenplum. WhereScape RED generates Greenplum-specific procedural code for data movement and transformation and also supports Microsoft SSIS or ODBC to help integrate data into a single environment. WhereScape RED’s integrated scheduler provides a single point of management for your entire Greenplum data warehouse platform, supporting restart after failure and full error and audit logging.

In addition to all the benefits, IoT is also bringing new kind of customer experience challenges - cars that unlock themselves, thermostats turning houses into saunas and baby video monitors broadcasting over the internet. This list can only increase because while IoT services should be intuitive and simple to use, the delivery ecosystem is a myriad of potential problems as IoT explodes complexity. So finding a performance issue is like finding the proverbial needle in the haystack.
