SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN -- (Marketwired) -- 05/13/14 -- Department of Canadian Heritage
The Government of Canada is providing $49,500 in funding to the Federation des aines fransaskois (FAF) for its 2014-2015 programming, which will make it possible to offer services, workshops, and projects to approximately 400 seniors.
Maurice Vellacott, Member of Parliament (Saskatoon-Wanuskewin), made this announcement today on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages Shelly Glover. The Government of Canada is providing this financial support under the Community Life component of the Development of Official-Language Communities Program.
-- The Federation des aines fransaskois supports the development and growth of Francophones and Francophiles aged 50 and over in Saskatchewan. It comprises a number of seniors' clubs, as well as individual members from rural and urban areas in the Prince Albert, Debden, Saskatoon, Ponteix, St. Denis, Regina, and Zenon Park regions. -- The FAF promotes the well-being of seniors; organizes socio-cultural activities in French-such as the seniors/youth book club in a school setting-and activities aimed at accessing the seniors' collective memory. It also offers sessions on topics such as healthy eating, physical activity, mental health, and awareness of fraud, violence, and abuse. -- The FAF works with other organizations that offer services to seniors, such as the Reseau sante en francais de la Saskatchewan.
"Today's announcement demonstrates our commitment to supporting organizations that contribute to the cultural and economic vitality of the Francophone community in Saskatchewan. It is essential that French-speaking seniors and young retirees in the province be able to continue living in French in their communities."
-Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages
"With this investment, Fransaskois seniors and retirees will have access to activities that meet their needs and contribute to their well-being. I am proud that our Government is supporting the efforts of the Federation des aines fransaskois."
-Maurice Vellacott, Member of Parliament (Saskatoon-Wanuskewin)
"The Federation des aines fransaskois is delighted by the support from Canadian Heritage in order to deliver a program of activities and training that encourage the full participation of seniors in the community development of their regions. The FAF brings together Fransaskois aged 50 and up in a half-dozen rural communities and in cities. Thanks to this funding, the province's clubs for Francophone seniors will be able to expand their volunteer activities, for the benefit of these seniors and their communities."
