SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 05/21/14 -- Golden Gate University (GGU) has been selected to participate in the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) Competency Based Education Jumpstart program. Funded by the Lumina Foundation, the initiative helps build the capacity of higher education institutions to offer competency-based education degree programs to assist students so they can make progress toward a degree by successfully completing assessments of a defined set of competencies, rather than solely through successful completion of credit-hour-based coursework. For many, this could dramatically decrease the time and money it takes to earn a degree.
GGU is the only Northern California higher education institution selected for this program, and one of only 14 nationwide. "This innovative, competency-based approach places the focus on what a student knows and can do, not where the student learned it or how long it took to learn," said Cherron Hoppes, Dean of Undergraduate Programs. "CBE initiatives will allow our students to access new learning modes, demonstrate their college-level competencies and move more rapidly to reaching their goal of completing their degree."
The move toward embracing Competency Based Education (CBE) has been growing. Many higher education officials and legislators nationwide continue to support it as an option for students pursuing a degree. President Barack Obama praised CBE in his August 2013 speech on affordability in higher education, and the governors of Indiana, Texas and Wisconsin have also supported competency-based approaches in postsecondary education.
