NVTC Committees Join Forces to Co-Host Spring Gala Event May 29

Data Center and Cybersecurity Groups to Examine Myths and Reality of Security in the Cloud

MCLEAN, VA -- (Marketwired) -- 05/21/14 -- The Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC) Data Center and Cloud Infrastructure Committee (DCCIC) and the NVTC Cybersecurity & Privacy Committee today announced plans for a public event to be co-hosted and held on May 29th at the Ritz Carlton in McLean, Va. Registration can be found here.

"Security in the Cloud" is the theme of the breakfast event that will examine how organizations can better leverage the cloud to secure critical systems and improve customer privacy. The event will feature a keynote address by Mark Ryland, AWS Chief Solutions Architect - Worldwide Public Sector, followed by a panel discussion moderated by former distinguished Gartner analyst Ted Chamberlin.

The cloud represents a huge transformational shift in the way organizations leverage technology for greater agility, productivity and efficiency. In the early days of this shift to logical versus physical isolation and control, customers naturally raised concerns about security and privacy. But the conversation is now shifting from concerns to ways in which the cloud can actually make businesses and government agencies more secure and improve customer privacy.

The moderated panel will feature Ryland along with experts representing industry, Cyber and government interests -- each with hands-on experience and a unique perspective on what "security" and "privacy" really mean in the era of cloud. These include:

  • Riley Repko - Vice President, Global Cyber Strategy at Chemring Group. Riley formerly served as Senior Advisor, Cyber Operations & Transformation at the U.S.A.F. and is also a Senior Fellow in Cyber Security at Virginia Tech.

  • Dwight Gibbs - CEO at Contraqer and former CTO at INPUT (prior to Deltek acquisition) and formerly CTO of Legg Mason Capital Management. Currently a user of AWS.

Specifically, the panel will examine:

  • Misperceptions of the cloud globally -- what the cloud is (and what it isn't);
  • How cloud "security" compares to what was done before;
  • State of adoption for mission-critical data and apps in the cloud today -- and what leading enterprises are doing to make cloud a reality;
  • How to know you are taking the right steps to ensure maximum security and privacy in the cloud

Who should attend?

  • Any IT decision-maker currently consuming cloud, hosting or data center Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) or Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)

  • Anyone doing it themselves today but expecting to make a "build vs. buy" decision in the future.

"We are proud to have two distinguished committees collaborate on an issue with such wide ranging impact," said NVTC President and CEO Bobbie Kilberg. "This event brings together a perfect combination of critical expertise that will examine the issues and demystify the cloud with real-world examples so attendees can walk away with new understanding and fully realize the benefits of cloud on a global scale."

The NVTC Data Center and Cloud Infrastructure Committee's mission is to provide a clear, collective and compelling voice for the region's data center and cloud and critical infrastructure community in an effort to contribute to the long term growth and prosperity of the industry. It examines a variety of issues and measures the impact of the data center ecosystem on regional business and job growth.

The NVTC Cybersecurity and Privacy Committee's mission is to educate and provide best practices on all aspects of cyber security. Through educational forums and insightful dialogue with NVTC members, the committee will become a valuable resource for those in the Northern Virginia technology community who want to stay updated on the current issues and developments that pertain to cyber security.

A strange thing is happening along the way to the Internet of Things, namely far too many devices to work with and manage. It has become clear that we'll need much higher efficiency user experiences that can allow us to more easily and scalably work with the thousands of devices that will soon be in each of our lives. Enter the conversational interface revolution, combining bots we can literally talk with, gesture to, and even direct with our thoughts, with embedded artificial intelligence, whic...
Everywhere we turn in our industry we can find strong opinions about the direction, type and nature of cloud’s impact on computing and business. DevOps is often described as a combination of technology and culture. Without both, DevOps isn't complete. However, applying the culture to outdated technology is a recipe for disaster; as response times grow and connections between teams are delayed by technology, the culture will die. A Nutanix Enterprise Cloud has many benefits that provide the needed base for a true DevOps paradigm. In his Day 3 Keynote at 20th Cloud Expo, Chris Brown, a Solutions Marketing Manager at Nutanix, will explore t...

You know you need the cloud, but you’re hesitant to simply dump everything at Amazon since you know that not all workloads are suitable for cloud. You know that you want the kind of ease of use and scalability that you get with public cloud, but your applications are architected in a way that makes the public cloud a non-starter. You’re looking at private cloud solutions based on hyperconverged infrastructure, but you’re concerned with the limits inherent in those technologies.
