Cyan (NYSE: CYNI), a leading provider of SDN, NFV, and packet-optical solutions for network operators, today announced that it is collaborating with Telefónica and Red Hat to develop a network functions virtualization (NFV) architecture to support the deterministic placement of virtualized network functions (VNFs). Cyan is delivering the NFV orchestrator that will make use of enhancements being made to OpenStack developed by Red Hat in close collaboration with Telefónica.
“Telefónica believes NFV is an important and transformative technology,” said Enrique Algaba, Network Innovation and Virtualisation Director at Telefónica I+D-Global CTO Unit. “We believe that the deterministic allocation of CPU, memory, I/O, and storage relative to a particular type of VNF is critical to delivering the predictable performance needed for telco-grade network functions. This new deterministic architecture transforms a generic cloud computing data center into a Telco Data Center capable of supporting NFV.”
Using the Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform, Cyan’s Blue Planet SDN Platform will be designed to orchestrate the deterministic placement of virtual network functions in the server infrastructure to maximize the performance of that VNF.
“Cyan is proud to be working on such an innovative technological project with industry thought leaders Telefónica and Red Hat,” said Michael Hatfield, President, Cyan. “Cyan’s Blue Planet is a multi-vendor NFV orchestrator, ensuring that communications service providers (CSPs) can successfully use this architecture for a wide variety of use cases.”
“NFV offers CSPs the ability to reduce infrastructure cost via simplified network design and management, while increasing agility to achieve faster time to revenue,” said Radhesh Balakrishnan, General Manager, Virtualization and OpenStack, Red Hat. “Along with OpenStack, NFV truly has the ability to revolutionize the way CSPs build and operate their networks. We're pleased to continue our collaboration with both Cyan and Telefónica to help bring the power of OpenStack to NFV."
Cyan enables network transformation. The company’s software-defined network (SDN) solutions deliver orchestration, agility, and scale to networks, that until now, have been static and hardware driven. Serving carriers, enterprises, governments, and data centers globally, Cyan’s open platforms provide multi-vendor control and visibility to network operators, making service delivery more efficient and profitable. Cyan solutions include the award-winning Blue Planet SDN software and Z-Series packet-optical transport platforms.
