ADTRAN®, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADTN), a leading provider of next-generation networking solutions, today announced as part of its Enabling Communities, Connecting Lives program, that Comporium will leverage ADTRAN’s broadband portfolio to deliver Gigabit service to the community of Rock Hill, South Carolina as the town looks to reinvent itself to keep up with the changing economy. An economic development and urban strategy – known as Knowledge Park – is currently being implemented by Comporium, the City of Rock Hill, Winthrop University and other community partners to transform the city’s historical center into a vibrant hub of entrepreneurial activity and “knowledge economy” jobs. Comporium is providing a critical catalyst for the effort by upgrading its network infrastructure with ADTRAN solutions to deliver ultra-fast broadband services for new and existing business customers. This world-class broadband network will enable significant economic growth as businesses relocate to one of the only Gigabit communities in the region.
Fully invested and dedicated to the advancement of the communities it serves, Comporium offers voice, video, data, Internet and security services to both residential and business customers throughout several North and South Carolina markets. The Knowledge Park economic development plan is designed to take advantage of Rock Hill’s existing strengths, including the presence of a leading university and several major knowledge economy businesses. Comporium and its community partners are also setting the stage to evolve and grow the city into one that can support an expanded business community, especially for industries that rely heavily on fast Internet speeds, including website and software development and 3D printing services. Comporium recently introduced their Zipstream service to support the development. The new service offers unprecedented speeds with Gigabit service, providing businesses with the bandwidth they need to successfully compete in today’s global economy.
When looking to redesign the downtown network, Comporium needed a solution that could not only support the fast Gigabit speeds needed today, but was also able to provide the scalability needed for future bandwidth growth. As a result, they turned to ADTRAN and the Total Access® 5004. A compact solution, the Total Access 5004 is designed to deliver higher rate premium services over fiber or existing infrastructure deep into the network. The portfolio leverages ADTRAN’s Advanced Services Architecture to offer next-generation residential and business services onto a converged infrastructure. This provides unprecedented architecture scalability and the ability to provide operational cost savings with a single network, all services approach.
“Rock Hill is a community with a vision to grow as a hub for knowledge economy businesses,” said Comporium’s Matt Dosch, senior vice president of external affairs. “With that mindset, Comporium has worked closely with our partners in the community to ensure that we are providing the infrastructure to support Rock Hill’s Knowledge Park strategy. Our discussions with leaders in other Gigabit communities around the country reinforced our desire to offer very high-speed Internet services to attract new companies, as well as give existing companies a competitive advantage in the new information economy. ADTRAN’s broadband platform enables us to achieve this goal with our Zipstream Gigabit services today and gives us peace-of-mind knowing we have a solution that will scale as the area continues to grow.”
“As the only Gigabit community in the region, Comporium is being very innovative in their approach to supporting the local economy,” said Mitch Fleming, regional vice president, sales, ADTRAN Carrier Networks Division. “ADTRAN has always taken pride in helping our customers be successful in their communities, but it’s even more rewarding when the solutions help a community evolve, change and grow. The portfolio is going beyond simply providing broadband; it’s helping Comporium revitalize a city that will benefit both businesses and residents as well as making the community stronger in the long run.”
ADTRAN’s Enabling Communities, Connecting Lives program showcases how innovative technologies are being used in cities, towns and communities across the country to support economic growth, urban redevelopment, educational and municipal service support, and innovative residential service delivery. These communities are using ADTRAN’s world-class broadband, Wi-Fi and Cloud service offerings to re-invigorate downtown business and residential districts, connect classrooms with other learning centers around the world, and help attract new companies seeking to relocate out of crowded urban centers.

Too often with compelling new technologies market participants become overly enamored with that attractiveness of the technology and neglect underlying business drivers. This tendency, what some call the “newest shiny object syndrome,” is understandable given that virtually all of us are heavily engaged in technology. But it is also mistaken. Without concrete business cases driving its deployment, IoT, like many other technologies before it, will fade into obscurity.

Contrary to mainstream media attention, the multiple possibilities of how consumer IoT will transform our everyday lives aren’t the only angle of this headline-gaining trend. There’s a huge opportunity for “industrial IoT” and “Smart Cities” to impact the world in the same capacity – especially during critical situations. For example, a community water dam that needs to release water can leverage embedded critical communications logic to alert the appropriate individuals, on the right device, as...
