Canada's flagship global nutrition organization, the Micronutrient Initiative, applauds Canada's commitment to the world's most vulnerable women and children at the Prime Minister's Summit, "Saving Every Women, Every Child". Today, Canada committed $3.5 billion to address maternal, newborn and child health initiatives around the world.
"Today is a day all Canadians can be proud of because we have stood up again and loudly stated to the world that Canada cares," said Micronutrient Initiative (MI) President Joel Spicer.
The Summit has brought together leaders from a variety of sectors to explore how to work better together for impact. Despite progress that has been made to date, too many continue to suffer. Last year, 6.3 million children died, mostly from preventable causes. Forty-five percent of those deaths were linked to undernutrition.
"Preventable deaths among mothers and children are one of the greatest symbols of injustice and inequity in the world today. It is inspiring to see Canada standing up and leading a growing chorus of voices that are saying 'no more'," Spicer said.
"Canada's commitment to this issue is an example of Canadian values in action and we know there is a lot of hard work ahead working in partnership with others. Together, we can change the arc of possibility for millions of people and of future generations and MI is ready to support this effort."
MI is a global organization, headquartered in Canada that reaches 500 million people every year with interventions to boost nutrition for the world's most vulnerable, especially women and children.
