Mellanox® Technologies, Ltd. (NASDAQ:MLNX), a leading supplier of high-performance, end-to-end interconnect solutions for data center servers and storage systems, today announced the general availability of its Virtual Modular Switch (VMS) Wizard, a new automation software for planning, installing and validating Ethernet Switching fabrics.
Mellanox VMS is a high-port density, non-blocking, flexible and scalable data center aggregation switching solution constructed by connecting Mellanox’s 40 and 56 Gigabit Ethernet systems. When compared to modular switches, VMS better scales to thousands of 10GbE or 40GbE nodes with low latency and best-in-class resiliency, while reducing capital expenses by up to 85 percent and power consumption by up to 90 percent.
As part of the Open Ethernet™ initiative, the new VMS Wizard software automates the entire process of design, set-up and functional validation of the VMS. Through an easy-to-use graphical user interface (GUI) and simple user input such as the fabric size and the switches in use, the VMS wizard generates a connectivity recommendations plan. Once the switches are installed and connected, the VMS Wizard configures the fabric switches either through PuppetTM manifests or by Command Line Interface (CLI) commands. Last, the program performs physical layer 2 and layer 3 connectivity validations. Additional functionality integrated into the VMS Wizard is the configuration of high availability based on Multi-Chassis Link Aggregation (mLAG).
“Our customers who used the VMS wizard as part of their Ethernet fabric design and installation experienced shorter deployment times,” said Gilad Shainer, vice president of marketing at Mellanox Technologies. “By leveraging the automation, advanced planning and fabric, the build-up process was very simple and potential connectivity or configuration errors were eliminated. As a result, the systems were ready faster for their users and enabled higher system return-on-investment.”
Reinforcing its commitment to Open Ethernet, open source and Software Defined Networking (SDN), Mellanox enhanced Puppet’s capabilities and contributed new configuration types to the developer’s community such as OSPF and layer 3 interfaces. With the new configuration types, Puppet can be used for both L2 switching and scalable L3 switching fabrics.
The VMS Wizard is an open tool, which can be downloaded for free. The VMS Wizard can be installed on RedHat servers and requires Python and Puppet Enterprise environments. Mellanox’s enhanced Puppet agent is available on the Puppet Forge.

Fact: storage performance problems have only gotten more complicated, as applications not only have become largely virtualized, but also have moved to cloud-based infrastructures. Storage performance in virtualized environments isn’t just about IOPS anymore. Instead, you need to guarantee performance for individual VMs, helping applications maintain performance as the number of VMs continues to go up in real time. In his session at Cloud Expo, Dhiraj Sehgal, Product and Marketing at Tintri, wil...

As software becomes more and more complex, we, as software developers, have been splitting up our code into smaller and smaller components. This is also true for the environment in which we run our code: going from bare metal, to VMs to the modern-day Cloud Native world of containers, schedulers and microservices. While we have figured out how to run containerized applications in the cloud using schedulers, we've yet to come up with a good solution to bridge the gap between getting your conta...

19th Cloud Expo, taking place November 1-3, 2016, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA, will feature technical sessions from a rock star conference faculty and the leading industry players in the world. Cloud computing is now being embraced by a majority of enterprises of all sizes. Yesterday's debate about public vs. private has transformed into the reality of hybrid cloud: a recent survey shows that 74% of enterprises have a hybrid cloud strategy. Meanwhile, 94% of enterpri...

Amazon has gradually rolled out parts of its IoT offerings, but these are just the tip of the iceberg. In addition to optimizing their backend AWS offerings, Amazon is laying the ground work to be a major force in IoT - especially in the connected home and office. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Chris Kocher, founder and managing director of Grey Heron, explained how Amazon is extending its reach to become a major force in IoT by building on its dominant cloud IoT platform, its Dash Button strat...
