The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued PlayPhone®, Inc., a global leader in mobile social gaming, a key patent that covers real-time multiplayer gaming, a trend that is significantly on the rise worldwide. U.S. Patent No. 8,556,713 enables game developers to easily convert their single player game into a multiplayer game using PlayPhone’s cross-platform (iOS and Android) multiplayer gaming technology.
“This is a significant patent in the social gaming space where multiplayer games are becoming an important consideration for game developers to increase the engagement and virality of their games,” said Bhaskar Roy, Chief Product Officer of PlayPhone. “It further establishes the technological leadership of PlayPhone’s platform.”
PlayPhone’s new patent covers the technology in PlayPhone’s cross platform SDK that provides the ability to invite and match gamers. Matched gamers are placed in a common lobby where they can join their chosen game and start playing together. The patent also includes claims regarding advertising placements and analytics reporting for these multiplayer games. Games like Sotodo’s Battlenova, Oktagon’s Bingo Live and Orneon’s Pipe Bomber utilize this multiplayer technology and are available on PlayPhone’s carrier game stores globally.
With gamers looking to play and compete with each other, social and multiplayer games are in demand especially on mobile devices like smartphones and tablets making this an important intellectual property for PlayPhone.
Game developers around the world are using PlayPhone’s SDK to launch and monetize games globally using a single integration SDK. “From a development and revenue opportunity perspective, all we see is upside and potential with PlayPhone,” states Kevin Roberts, Ambush Games.
