MONTREAL, QUEBEC -- (Marketwired) -- 06/06/14 -- On June 10th, the Suite Tur Malka (the King's Mountain in Aramaic), will be presented at the Maison Symphonique de Montreal. This composition by Henri Oppenheim will be performed by the McGill Chamber Orchestra and the Magillah quartet. The lead singer is Karen Young, known for her performances of jazz and Baroque music. The group will be joined by special guest clarinettist Simon Aldrich. Suite Tur Malka is a modern orchestral adaptation of seven works by Montreal poets of the 20th century writing in Yiddish.
"This project has been a twofold personal quest. On the one hand, it represents a deepened appreciation of my Jewish cultural roots, and on the other hand, it is a statement about belonging to the Montreal community. With the collaboration of the Montreal Jewish Public Library, I came across these remarkable poems. I decided to compose music to these poems in order to share this very rich heritage from the 20th century" said Henri Oppenheim about his artistic endeavour.
Suite Tur Malka will be performed by singer Karen Young; composer-interpreter Henri Oppenheim (accordion and guitar); Vanessa Marcoux (violin and mandolin); Michael Emenau (percussion); and special guest clarinetist Simon Aldrich. Four poets will be celebrated during this concert: N.I. Gottlib, I. Maze, C. Rosenfarb and J.I. Segal.
Suite Tur Malka will be recorded by the original quartet this summer. The CD will be available next fall. Magillah will have the great honour of working with Frank London as producer. He is best known as the trumpeter of the New York band The Klezmatics. A crowd-sourcing fundraising campaign is underway to support this very important Yiddish cultural project. All generous philanthropists are more than welcome to contribute at the following address: www.igg.me/at/Magillah.
This show will be presented as part of the Klez-Kabaret, on Tuesday June 10th at the Maison symphonique de Montreal. The McGill Chamber Orchestra will be under the direction of conductor Boris Brott to present the Esther Diary composed by Haralabos Stafylaki, with soprano Sharon Azrieli Perez. A talk will be held just before the concert at 6: 30 PM.
