about.me Raises $11 Million Led by Foundry Group

about.me, the online identity platform, today announced that it has raised $11 million in Series B funding. The round was led by Foundry Group, with participation from True Ventures, SoftTech VC, CrunchFund and Bullpen Capital. about.me, co-founded by Tony Conrad and Ryan Freitas, will use the new funding to expand to new verticals and build on its existing product.

“In the past few years, we have seen about.me users discover and connect with other like-minded individuals who they might not have encountered on other social networks,” said Conrad, co-founder and CEO of about.me. “Now our goal is to build on that existing experience by adding features that will give our users something more tangible to work with and a reason to come back and regularly interact with their about.me page. Foundry and all of our investors really understood our vision for the product.”

In addition to leading the round of funding, Foundry Group’s Managing Director Brad Feld will join the about.me Board of Directors. Feld co-founded Foundry Group in 2006 and has been an early stage investor and entrepreneur since 1987. He is also the co-founder of TechStars, Mobius Venture Capital, and Intensity Ventures. Feld will act as an important resource for the about.me team as the company looks to further develop the platform to create more value and utility for its user base.

“There are endless options in today’s world of how to depict yourself online, but there has yet to be a singular platform that gives individuals full control of their online identity,” said Feld, Managing Director of Foundry Group. “about.me gives users this ability, and we think there is something very exciting about the possibilities ahead, both in terms of the product and the team leading it. We look forward to being a part of about.me’s growth as the company evolves and expands into new markets.”

about.me was founded in December 2010 and acquired by Aol shortly after it launched publicly. In February 2013, Conrad and Freitas bought back the company and since then have been focusing on user acquisition and engagement. The company has seen tremendous growth since buying back the company just over one year ago, with over 4.5 million users and page-views, logins, time spent on site, and active users at all-time highs. about.me previously raised $5.7 million in Series A funding from True Ventures, Google Ventures, SoftTech VC, SVA Capital and Aol Ventures.
