Pica8, the leader in open systems for software defined networking (SDN), is conducting live 40GbE line-rate VXLAN demonstrations during INTEROP Tokyo June 6-11. Utilizing two white box bare metal switches from Foxconn featuring the new Broadcom Trident-2 chipset, running PicOS 2.3, Pica8 is creating a VXLAN tunnel over a core layer 3 network enabling seamless VM mobility using standard orchestration tools across a Layer 3 boundary. Support for VXLAN within commoditized white box switches will help VMware virtualized environments scale more cost-effectively for top-of-rack (ToR) deployments. By utilizing Broadcom’s Trident2 chip, Pica8 will enable customers to offload VXLAN termination and free up CPU resources for better network infrastructure.
While a 40GbE line rate in a VXLAN tunnel demonstrated effective scaling in an enterprise cloud or service provider environment, VMs are traversing seamlessly across one or more Layer 3 boundaries between the two devices. To show an overlay network expansion at line rate this is the foundation for multi services independent of current legacy geographical location limitations. This is an overlay / underlay multi-layer compatibility infrastructure required to deploy SDN into existing infrastructures.
Pica8 incorporates the Trident 2 chip into two hardware platforms: the P-5401, a 32 x 40 GbE switch, and the P-5101, a 48 x 10 GbE model. Availability for Pica8 switches with VXLAN technology is scheduled for the third quarter of 2014.
“The Japanese and U.S. market presents tremendous opportunity for many of the same reasons like traffic expulsion inside the data centers and the need for scalable growth path and site agnostic topologies, cloud providers recognize that they too must have programmable networks that can easily adapt to changing market conditions yet be compatible with existing infrastructure,” says Zeus Kerravala, Principal Analyst, ZK Research. “Providers in Japan such as NTT are driving the need for SDN as these organizations need this kind of network performance and scale today in order to provide the services they need to grow their respective businesses.”
“We are excited to lead the SDN market in Japan. Through our partnership with Pica8, we are seeing strong interest with cloud providers for network agility, scale and cost reductions. Pica8’s software roadmap and their ability to leverage white box bare metal switches enable us to increasingly gain mindshare in the Japanese market,” says Takashi Sekine, Managing Director for NCLC.
Pica8 is demonstrating within the booth of its partner, NCLC, located at booth 6N04.
NCLC has been promoting Pica8 products in Japan since 2012 as Pica8’s sole authorized resale agent, and will continue to aggressively offer Japanese customers next generation network solutions demanded by cloud computing environments. For more information, visit http://www.nclc.co.jp.

MongoDB Atlas leverages VPC peering for AWS, a service that allows multiple VPC networks to interact. This includes VPCs that belong to other AWS account holders. By performing cross account VPC peering, users ensure networks that host and communicate their data are secure. In his session at 20th Cloud Expo, Jay Gordon, a Developer Advocate at MongoDB, will explain how to properly architect your VPC using existing AWS tools and then peer with your MongoDB Atlas cluster. He'll discuss the secur...

Keeping pace with advancements in software delivery processes and tooling is taxing even for the most proficient organizations. Point tools, platforms, open source and the increasing adoption of private and public cloud services requires strong engineering rigor - all in the face of developer demands to use the tools of choice. As Agile has settled in as a mainstream practice, now DevOps has emerged as the next wave to improve software delivery speed and output. To make DevOps work, organization...

Without a clear strategy for cost control and an architecture designed with cloud services in mind, costs and operational performance can quickly get out of control. To avoid multiple architectural redesigns requires extensive thought and planning. Boundary (now part of BMC) launched a new public-facing multi-tenant high resolution monitoring service on Amazon AWS two years ago, facing challenges and learning best practices in the early days of the new service.

DevOps is often described as a combination of technology and culture. Without both, DevOps isn't complete. However, applying the culture to outdated technology is a recipe for disaster; as response times grow and connections between teams are delayed by technology, the culture will die. A Nutanix Enterprise Cloud has many benefits that provide the needed base for a true DevOps paradigm.

DevOps tends to focus on the relationship between Dev and Ops, putting an emphasis on the ops and application infrastructure. But that’s changing with microservices architectures. In her session at DevOps Summit, Lori MacVittie, Evangelist for F5 Networks, will focus on how microservices are changing the underlying architectures needed to scale, secure and deliver applications based on highly distributed (micro) services and why that means an expansion into “the network” for DevOps.
