CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA--(Marketwired - June 13, 2014) - The Charlottesville Albemarle Convention & Visitors Bureau (CACVB) invites visitors and locals alike to take part in amazing festivals this summer.
Presenting an outdoor exhibit, an outdoor evening projection & dinner party, and an on-stage interview with a world-renowned photographer, LOOK3 -- LOOKbetween celebrates the art of photography in all its forms. From New York to China to Tanzania, LOOK3 will bring many of the world's leading early career photographers to LOOKbetween 2014. Taking place only once every four years, LOOKbetween is the anchor event of the LOOK3 mentorship Program. This event will take place June 13th through the 15th at Deep Rock Farm near Charlottesville, Virginia. In addition, visitors can already admire gorgeous poster-size photographs hanging from the trees on the historic Downtown Mall. The banners feature images of beautiful creatures, which could be headed irreversibly toward extinction by 2100. That's the idea behind the Photo Ark project and TREES exhibit: getting the public to look these creatures in the eye, and care enough to save them while there is still time. Photography enthusiasts can attend "Artist's Talk: The Photo Ark" at the Paramount Theater on June 18, to hear the stories behind Joel Sartore's incredible images. More details can be found at http://www.look3.org/.
Theater lovers are in for a treat, as the 40thedition of the Heritage Theater Festival (HTF) kicks off a five-show season on June 16. Since 1974, the HTF has been in residence during the summer months as the University of Virginia's professional theatre. Filled with classic audience favorites and fascinating contemporary works, the HTF has an irresistible line-up of amazing productions again this summer. Heritage audiences will get a special pre-season treat this year when writer/actor/director Frank Ferrante brings his acclaimed one-man show An Evening With Groucho to the Ruth Caplin Theatre, followed by the Tony Award®-winning musical Thoroughly Modern Millie. Next up will be a killer of a comedy that has resulted in an epidemic of laughter for more than 25 years in Boston, Washington and throughout the country: Shear Madness. Flesh and felt join forces for the Broadway sensation Avenue Q, which will open on July 22. Last but not least, British comedy at its best is on tap beginning July 24 with the Tony Award-winning One Man, Two Guvnors. A performance schedule and tickets are available at http://www.virginia.edu/heritagetheatre/.
Another staple event will return for its 37thseason; the Ash Lawn Opera Festival will be presented at The Paramount Theater in downtown Charlottesville. The Festival will open with Carlisle Floyd's moving and melodious Susannah, which is one of the most beloved and often produced American operas with performances at The Paramount Theater on July 11, 13, and 16. The summer continues with five performances of Bock and Harnick's ever-popular Fiddler on the Roof on July 31, August 2, 3, 6, and 8. Now in its 50th anniversary season, the work won nine Tony Awards and ran for eight consecutive seasons on Broadway, then the longest run in Broadway history. The Festival also provides a wide range of educational programs for youth and adults; professional training for emerging artists and interns; and seeks to enrich the cultural vitality and quality of life in Virginia and the mid-Atlantic region. More information can be found at http://www.ashlawnopera.com/ and tickets can be purchased at http://www.theparamount.net/.
The Albemarle County Fair will be held on July 31 through August 2. A fun and festive "Old-Time Country Fair," the 2014 Albemarle County Fair will be a three-day agricultural celebration, complete with farm animals, exhibits, baked goods, crafts, family entertainment, 4-H events, livestock, and grand old-time country fun! New for 2014: In conjunction with the Albemarle County Fair, Ash Lawn-Highland will offer a selection of demonstrations and exhibits about historic crafts.
