OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 06/19/14 -- The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today offered her congratulations to the 2014 graduating class of fishery officers and welcomed them to the Conservation and Protection Branch of Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
The graduates completed an 18-week classroom training program, which also included ten weeks of enforcement training at the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Training Academy in Regina, Saskatchewan. They will soon be making their way to Conservation and Protection field offices across Canada to complete 30 months of practical training.
-- Fishery Officers are responsible for the enforcement of the Fisheries Act, the Species at Risk Act, the Oceans' Act, the Coastal Fisheries Protection Act, as well as a series of other acts and regulations that ultimately ensure the conservation and protection of Canada's fisheries. -- In addition to protecting fish and fish habitat, fishery officers promote compliance and conservation, stewardship and sustainability of fisheries. They also work to increase awareness through various public events and other relevant opportunities.
"Our commercial and recreational fisheries play an important role in the Canadian economy. They represent a critical source of livelihood for many families in Canada's coastal communities. Ensuring their continued sustainability is of paramount importance to our Government and that's why we are so grateful to these 12 men and women for their tireless efforts to that end. They have a big responsibility ahead of them."
