Actifio Named a “Visionary” in the 2014 Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Backup Software and Integrated Appliances

Actifio™, the radically simple copy
data virtualization company, today announced that for a 2nd
year in a row, it has been positioned by Gartner Inc. in the
“Visionaries” quadrant of the 2014 “Magic
Quadrant: Enterprise Backup Software and Integrated Appliances”1
“We’re pleased to have been recognized once again as a ‘Visionary’,” said
Ash Ashutosh, Actifio Founder & CEO. “We see this as further
validation of our founding premise… that backup needn’t be treated as a
siloed, expensive, and underutilized insurance policy against a bad
outcome. Enterprise data should be treated as an asset, managed
holistically as part of an integrated copy data management model, and
leveraged to provide improved resiliency, agility, and access to the
In the report, Gartner states, “By 2018, 40% of organizations will
augment with additional products or replace their current backup
application” and that “by 2016, 20% of organizations, up from 7% today,
will employ only snapshot and replication techniques, abandoning
traditional backup/recovery.” Actifio believes that Copy Data
Virtualization addresses user frustrations with traditional backup and
recovery approaches for enterprises and cloud service providers.
Actifio virtualizes data as other technologies have virtualized compute
and networking, decoupling management of increasingly strategic
enterprise data from increasingly commoditized enterprise
infrastructure. To date more than 400 enterprises and cloud service
providers (CSP) across 34 countries have chosen Actifio’s Copy Data
Virtualization platform and the recently introduced Actifio
Resiliency Director for business agility, resiliency, and access to
the cloud for their most critical application platforms including SAP,
HP-UX, AIX, iSeries, and Microsoft.
Gartner also states “By 2017, 70% of organizations will have replaced
their remote-office tape backup with a disk-based backup solution that
incorporates replication, up from 30% today.” Recognizing this market
need, Actifio has continued to extend their Copy Data Virtualization
platform with the recently release Actifio
Sky Product family, which specifically address the unique challenges
of managing data in the modern distributed enterprise.
Actifio Sky offers a new level of deployment flexibility and range,
enabling seamless data management wherever the enterprise data is
located to improve data protection, governance, and analytics. Sky is
available today as a software-only appliance ideal for Remote / Branch
Offices (ROBOs,) and Cloud deployments for businesses looking to shift
enterprise workloads into the cloud. Together with Actifio’s CDS data
center appliance, Actifio Sky eliminates barriers to data mobility
between the edge to the core, enabling transformational data management
velocity and scale across the enterprise.

A critical component of any IoT project is what to do with all the data being generated. This data needs to be captured, processed, structured, and stored in a way to facilitate different kinds of queries. Traditional data warehouse and analytical systems are mature technologies that can be used to handle certain kinds of queries, but they are not always well suited to many problems, particularly when there is a need for real-time insights.

DevOps is being widely accepted (if not fully adopted) as essential in enterprise IT. But as Enterprise DevOps gains maturity, expands scope, and increases velocity, the need for data-driven decisions across teams becomes more acute. DevOps teams in any modern business must wrangle the ‘digital exhaust’ from the delivery toolchain, "pervasive" and "cognitive" computing, APIs and services, mobile devices and applications, the Internet of Things, and now even blockchain.

One of biggest questions about Big Data is “How do we harness all that information for business use quickly and effectively?” Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or spatial technology is about more than making maps, but adding critical context and meaning to data of all types, coming from all different channels – even sensors.

As software becomes more and more complex, we, as software developers, have been splitting up our code into smaller and smaller components.
This is also true for the environment in which we run our code: going from bare metal, to VMs to the modern-day Cloud Native world of containers, schedulers and microservices.
While we have figured out how to run containerized applications in the cloud using schedulers, we've yet to come up with a good solution to bridge the gap between getting your conta...

DevOps theory promotes a culture of continuous improvement built on collaboration, empowerment, systems thinking, and feedback loops. But how do you collaborate effectively across the traditional silos? How can you make decisions without system-wide visibility? How can you see the whole system when it is spread across teams and locations? How do you close feedback loops across teams and activities delivering complex multi-tier, cloud, container, serverless, and/or API-based services?
