CALGARY, ALBERTA -- (Marketwired) -- 06/25/14 -- Natural Resources Canada
Parliamentary Secretary Kelly Block, on behalf of the Honourable Greg Rickford, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario, opened the Energy Council of Canada's 2014 Canadian Energy Summit with a keynote address highlighting Canada's responsible energy development. As one of the best countries in the world to do business, Canada has the opportunity and the capability to meet the growing global energy demand.
Canada's energy sector provides Canada with billions in investment capital and revenue while providing thousands of jobs. Across Canada, hundreds of major projects, worth about $650 billion in new investment, are underway or planned within the next decade. Parliamentary Secretary Block emphasized that Canada must use this opportunity to find new markets for its resources.
The Canadian Energy Summit provides a platform for industry leaders and government to share ideas and information. Parliamentary Secretary Block highlighted the Government's commitment to innovation and world-class safety system for the transportation of energy. The Government of Canada recently announced new measures for pipeline and tanker safety that are focused on prevention, response and industry responsibility.
-- Canada has the third-largest oil reserves in the world, is the fifth- largest natural gas producer and the third-largest hydro producer. -- According to the International Energy Agency, oil will remain the dominant fuel globally for decades to come, even under the IEA's most stringent greenhouse gas reduction forecast. -- Canada is well-positioned to contribute to global energy security through energy innovation and efficiency across all energy sources. It has the capacity to deploy its energy know-how, technology and supply chain in partner countries to advance responsible resource development and use. -- From 2005 to 2012, Canadian greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 5.1 percent while the economy grew by 10.6 percent.
"We are taking action to increase our contribution to global energy security through the responsible development of our natural resources."
"Canada is committed to being a reliable, responsible supplier of energy resources to the world while continuously improving environmental protection."
