Harper Government Supports Community Infrastructure in Northern Manitoba

THOMPSON, MANITOBA -- (Marketwired) -- 06/25/14 -- Western Economic Diversification Canada

Today, the Honourable Michelle Rempel, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for several community infrastructure projects across northern Manitoba under the Government of Canada's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).

In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced support of $150 million over a two year period to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. The Fund supported projects that improved existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.

Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund

Through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF), the Harper Government has committed to creating jobs and supporting communities through repairs and improvements to existing community facilities. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is delivering the Fund in Western Canada with an allocation of $46.2 million over two years.

Projects across northern Manitoba received the following allocations:

                                                   students.

Town of Snow Lake     The recipient has upgraded the heating         $30,300
                     and air conditioning system of the Snow
                        Lake Community Hall. The upgrade has
                      increased the energy efficiency of the
                    building and provides the community with
                       an improved facility for a variety of

Town of The Pas -    The recipient has replaced the roof and         $54,337
Sam Waller Museum      installed new storm sashes on the Sam     (combined)
(2 projects)          Waller Museum. These improvements have
                       ensured structural integrity and have
                      improved the lifespan of the building.
                       The Sam Waller Museum is the longest-
                    standing government constructed facility
                                           in the community.

                    Whitney mess hall. Upgrades included LED
                          lighting, replaced flooring and an
                            additional propane heater. These
                       improvements provide community groups
                            with an improved hall for future

Thompson Boys and        The recipient has replaced the roof          $9,240
Girls Club           shingles and installed air conditioning
                          in the Club. The improvements have
                       provided a comfortable and attractive
                       environment for programs and services
                           for at-risk children and youth in
                          Thompson and the surrounding area.
