The Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, issued the following statement today with respect to the announcement of CBC/Radio-Canada's new five-year strategic plan.
"Today, CBC/Radio-Canada presented a strategic plan to modernize its operations and help ensure its relevance to Canadians now and in the future. Both public and private broadcasters are facing similar industry-wide challenges, and CBC/Radio-Canada has developed this plan to help it meet those challenges.
"As an arm's-length Crown corporation, CBC/Radio-Canada is responsible for its own operations, including strategic planning of this nature. As with all Crown corporations and Government agencies, we encourage CBC/Radio-Canada to take advantage of new and more efficient ways of doing business.
"CBC/Radio Canada receives significant taxpayer funds to assist the broadcaster in meeting its mandate under the Broadcasting Act, to the tune of over a billion dollars per year. While CBC/Radio-Canada must adapt to changing technology, demographics, audience preferences and competition for advertising dollars, our Government believes CBC/Radio-Canada can and should do so within its existing budget."
