Variable, Inc., developer of the NODE+ modular wireless sensor platform, today announced the launch of the HACKANODE 2014 Mobile App Global Challenge. Hosted by Challengepost.com, the online contest invites developers to build and submit new apps that creatively incorporate the NODE+ wireless sensor’s functionality in one of two ways: building a new app from scratch, or integrating NODE+’s capabilities into a pre-existing app.
NODE+, which CNNMoney called “The Coolest Gizmo We Found At CES” in 2013, features a wide variety of interchangeable sensor modules that allow users to do everything from capturing specific color information from any surface to reading environmental information such as temperature and barometric pressure.
Submissions to the Challenge will be evaluated by a panel of expert judges based on merits such as visual presentation, clearly defined value to end users, and intuitive user interface and experience. Cash prizes totaling $16,500 are available in the following categories:
1. Best Smart Glasses Integration Prize ($2,500)
2. Barcode Scanner Award ($2,500)
3. Supply Chain Management Award ($2,500)
4. Color Referencing Award ($2,500)
5. Academic Research ($1,500)
6. College Student Developer ($1,500)
7. High School Developer ($1,000)
8. Better World Award ($500)
9. Visionary Award ($500)
10. Best Female App Developer ($500)
11. 48-Hour Integration Award ($500)
12. People’s Choice Award ($500)
“The NODE platform and its wide array of interchangeable sensors affords an unprecedented level of flexibility for developers, and provides a virtually limitless amount of creative options for them as they integrate the device into new apps,” said George Yu, Ph.D., chief executive officer and founder, Variable, Inc. “The HACKANODE 2014 Challenge encourages developers to open their minds and apply their unique styles of creativity. We’re eager to see how that creativity evolves into actual applications, and we’re happy to reward the best for their vision.”
Among the 10 judges for HACKANODE 2014 are Steve Wozniak, co-founder, Apple Computer Inc. and chief scientist, Fusion-io; Nick Arnett, Under 20 community development manager, Thiel Foundation; Amar Kona, Android evangelist, Intel; and Tom Suder, president, MobileGov.
“We encourage developers to learn more about how NODE+ is being used, and to read through ideas we have had on how it could be used, on the ChallengePost website,” added Yu.
