TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 07/03/14 -- Between the Sochi Olympics and the FIFA world cup, it seems like our news cycle is dominated by sports coverage. Sport dominates our culture and the news cycle, but it is not often the subject of critical public policy discussions. Until now. The 83rd Annual Couchiching Summer Conference, August 7 - 10, will dig deep into the psyche of sport, examining the idea of competition itself and the way it brings out both the best and the worst in us.
Over four days, we will hear from 20 different speakers on all aspects of sport and public policy. We will hear from journalists on the media mythologies around sport icons and why violence sells. We will consider how Canada has bound its national identity to a sport that is too expensive for many young Canadians to play. Politicians will be asked to defend a spending policy that restricts funds for gym classes in elementary schools. And the conference will examine the exclusion, discrimination, corruption, cheating, match-fixing, and illegal gambling that are also part of the world of sport.
The annual Couchiching conference attracts politicians, industry and corporate leaders, future leaders, young professionals, and those interested in being part of a vigorous and passionate exchange of ideas on national and international matters of significance.
This year, speakers include:
John Doyle, The Globe and Mail's television critic, soccer rapporteur, and author of the national bestseller The World is a Ball: The Joy, Madness, and Meaning of Soccer.
The Honourable Ken Dryden, a Canadian politician, lawyer, businessman, author, and former NHL goaltender.
Thomas Hall, sprint canoeist and 2008 Olympic bronze medalist.
Nancy Lee, Former director of CBC Sports and vice president on the board of directors of the Commonwealth Games.
The Honourable Kellie Leitch, Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women.
David Peterson, Chair of the Board of Toronto 2015 Pan American Games Organizing Committee.
Glen Hodgson, Senior Vice President and Chief Economist of the Conference Board of Canada.
Bruce Kidd, PhD, Interim Principal of the University of Toronto Scarborough, Warden of Hart House, and a Professor of Kinesiology and Physical Education at the University of Toronto.
Richard Pound, Former Founding President of the World Anti-Doping Agency.
Elisabeth Walker-Young, Chef-de-Mission for the 2015 Para Pan Am Games

When it comes to IoT in the enterprise, namely the commercial building and hospitality markets, a benefit not getting the attention it deserves is energy efficiency, and IoT’s direct impact on a cleaner, greener environment when installed in smart buildings. Until now clean technology was offered piecemeal and led with point solutions that require significant systems integration to orchestrate and deploy. There didn't exist a 'top down' approach that can manage and monitor the way a Smart Buildi...

DevOps has often been described in terms of CAMS: Culture, Automation, Measuring, Sharing. While we’ve seen a lot of focus on the “A” and even on the “M”, there are very few examples of why the “C" is equally important in the DevOps equation. In her session at @DevOps Summit, Lori MacVittie, of F5 Networks, will explore HTTP/1 and HTTP/2 along with Microservices to illustrate why a collaborative culture between Dev, Ops, and the Network is critical to ensuring success.

In his session at @ThingsExpo, Tony Shan, Chief Architect at CTS, will explore the synergy of Big Data and IoT. First he will take a closer look at the Internet of Things and Big Data individually, in terms of what, which, why, where, when, who, how and how much. Then he will explore the relationship between IoT and Big Data. Specifically, he will drill down to how the 4Vs aspects intersect with IoT: Volume, Variety, Velocity and Value. In turn, Tony will analyze how the key components of IoT ...

DevOps delivers remarkable results. But does it help all of IT? Can traditional ‘mode 1’ IT benefit as much as innovative ‘mode 2’? How about the rest of your business? Or have you just shifted your bottleneck? And if so, what can you do about it? Improving dev and ops is necessary, but not sufficient. It often just shifts the burden sideways (e.g., to PMs, SQA, InfoSec, DBAs, NOC, etc.), upstream (to the PMO, Controller, Business Liaison, etc.), or downstream (to TechPubs, Service Desk, Traini...

The enterprise is being consumerized, and the consumer is being enterprised. Moore's Law does not matter anymore, the future belongs to business virtualization powered by invisible service architecture, powered by hyperscale and hyperconvergence, and facilitated by vertical streaming and horizontal scaling and consolidation. Mobile messaging has been a popular communication channel for more than 20 years. Finnish engineer Matti Makkonen invented the idea for SMS (Short Message Service) in 1984, making his vision a reality on December 3, 1992 by sending the first message ("Happy Christmas") from a PC to a cell phone. Since then, the technology has evolved immensely, from both a technology standpoint, and in our everyday uses for it. Originally used for person-to-person (P2P) communication, i.e., Sally sends a text...

Organizations already struggle with the simple collection of data resulting from the proliferation of IoT, lacking the right infrastructure to manage it. They can't only rely on the cloud to collect and utilize this data because many applications still require dedicated infrastructure for security, redundancy, performance, etc. In his session at 17th Cloud Expo, Emil Sayegh, CEO of Codero Hosting, will discuss how in order to resolve the inherent issues, companies need to combine dedicated a...

You have your devices and your data, but what about the rest of your Internet of Things story? Two popular classes of technologies that nicely handle the Big Data analytics for Internet of Things are Apache Hadoop and NoSQL. Hadoop is designed for parallelizing analytical work across many servers and is ideal for the massive data volumes you create with IoT devices. NoSQL databases such as Apache HBase are ideal for storing and retrieving IoT data as “time series data.”

Clearly the way forward is to move to cloud be it bare metal, VMs or containers. One aspect of the current public clouds that is slowing this cloud migration is cloud lock-in. Every cloud vendor is trying to make it very difficult to move out once a customer has chosen their cloud. In his session at 17th Cloud Expo, Naveen Nimmu, CEO of Clouber, Inc., will advocate that making the inter-cloud migration as simple as changing airlines would help the entire industry to quickly adopt the cloud wit...
