Analysts from Gartner, Inc. and Canalys have characterized the 3D printer market as being at an inflection point and growing rapidly.
Highly Capable, Highly Precise
The MOTA 3D Printer is highly capable, able to make objects up to 6.1 inches wide x 6.1 inches long x 6.5 inches high using either PLA or ABS plastic filaments. It is also highly precise, with a layer resolution of 100 microns and build resolutions of 11 microns in the X & Y axes and 2.5 microns in the Z axis. A broad range of print speeds -- 60-120 millimeters/second -- and optional heated print bed give users great flexibility in designing their creations for qualities such as texture, opacity, reflectiveness, line precision, strength and/or sharpness.
The printer is ready to use out of the box, with MOTA and open-source software as well as one filament spool.
Unlike most personal 3D printers, the MOTA 3D Printer has two spool holders, allowing users to swap filaments faster, and a filament protection cartridge to help prevent the filament from absorbing moisture in the air. Users can change filaments without removing the object being made.
An SD card reader slot in addition to a USB port lets users load design files without a computer nearby.
The printer has an enclosed and illuminated print bed with see-through walls that help minimize noise. A front-panel display provides information about parameters such as time and temperature and a soft-touch control panel allows users to input changes.
Kickstarter Price and Availability
The MOTA 3D Printer is available to Kickstarter backers for pre-orders with deliveries as early as August 2014. The project launched on July 7, 2014 and per Kickstarter rules will end on August 6, 2014.
Availability at leading consumer electronics retailers in North America is scheduled for October 2014 at a suggested retail price of $599.
