PHILADELPHIA, PA--(Marketwired - July 09, 2014) - Azavea, a geospatial analysis (GIS) software development company, was awarded a Partners in Innovation Award from the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Global City on a Cloud Innovation Challenge. Azavea's HunchLab software was chosen by AWS and a panel of experts based on criteria including the impact of their solution and the likelihood of long-term success.
Azavea received a Partners in Innovation Award for HunchLab, its crime predictive policing software.
It was selected based on a variety of criteria including:
- usefulness and impact of the application
- innovation of the approach to solve a problem
- ease of deployment/implementation of the application
- potential to help other local governments solve similar challenges
HunchLab is a predictive policing solution that helps police departments to use their resources more effectively by applying machine learning to forecast crime and then promoting evidence-based policing in these high-risk areas. The 2014 version of HunchLab is the culmination of almost 10 years of ongoing research into the application of data science to crime analysis and public safety, and its methodology fuses many crime theories and data sets into one picture of risk. This new technology is a departure from the conventional approach, which focuses on identification of crime hot spots. Instead, HunchLab automatically incorporates recent crime events, temporal cycles such as day of week and season, the weather, and geographic locations such as bars and schools to produce a forecast. The system can automatically identify these crime patterns and then optimize the forecast to match a department's available personnel and resources.
"We are honored to receive this Partners in Innovation Award from Amazon Web Services. As a B Corporation, Azavea strives to create civic geospatial software that helps make our communities more vital, resilient and sustainable. Azavea's civic cloud products rely on the ability to make complex calculations with large amounts of geospatial data. AWS makes it possible to create new kinds of digital software by leveraging a vast array of computing power and services in a cost effective way," said Robert Cheetham, Azavea CEO and President.

DevOps is being widely accepted (if not fully adopted) as essential in enterprise IT. But as Enterprise DevOps gains maturity, expands scope, and increases velocity, the need for data-driven decisions across teams becomes more acute. DevOps teams in any modern business must wrangle the ‘digital exhaust’ from the delivery toolchain, "pervasive" and "cognitive" computing, APIs and services, mobile devices and applications, the Internet of Things, and now even blockchain. In this power panel at @...

In the next five to ten years, millions, if not billions of things will become smarter. This smartness goes beyond connected things in our homes like the fridge, thermostat and fancy lighting, and into heavily regulated industries including aerospace, pharmaceutical/medical devices and energy. “Smartness” will embed itself within individual products that are part of our daily lives. We will engage with smart products - learning from them, informing them, and communicating with them. Smart produc...

More and more brands have jumped on the IoT bandwagon. We have an excess of wearables – activity trackers, smartwatches, smart glasses and sneakers, and more that track seemingly endless datapoints. However, most consumers have no idea what “IoT” means. Creating more wearables that track data shouldn't be the aim of brands; delivering meaningful, tangible relevance to their users should be. We're in a period in which the IoT pendulum is still swinging. Initially, it swung toward "smart for smar...
