KAMLOOPS, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwired) -- 07/09/14 -- Department of Canadian Heritage
The Kamloops Art Gallery has received funding of $5,529 under the Museums Assistance Program to improve the accessibility and functionality of its collections management system.
This support will allow the gallery to purchase new software, undertake a multimedia and network upgrade, migrate information from its old database, and train staff on the new system. The gallery will also implement an online component to its collection, allowing the public greater virtual access to its works.
Cathy McLeod, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour and for Western Economic Diversification and Member of Parliament (Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo), made this announcement today on behalf of the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.
-- The Kamloops Art Gallery was established in 1978 and is a designated a Category A institution under the Cultural Property Export and Import Act, with a collection of more than 1,700 works of art. -- As the principal visual arts gallery in British Columbia's Southern Interior, it serves residents and visitors to Kamloops and the Thompson- Nicola Regional District. -- The gallery offers a range of outreach activities, including studio programs for adults and children, educational programs linked to its exhibitions, and an artist-in-residence program. -- The Museums Assistance Program provides funding to Canadian museums and related institutions for projects that foster excellence in museum activities and that facilitate access to the treasures of our collective heritage.
"Local heritage institutions are so important to the vitality of communities across Canada. Our Government is committed to protecting our cultural treasures and ensuring that organizations like the Kamloops Art Gallery have the resources they need to carry out this important work."
-The Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages
"The Kamloops Art Gallery has served our community and helped chronicle its artistic history for over 30 years. These important upgrades will ensure the gallery's collections are further catalogued and safeguarded for Canadians and visitors from around the world for years to come."
-Cathy McLeod, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour and for Western Economic Diversification and Member of Parliament (Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo)
"The growth of an art museum's permanent collection is an inevitable and key part of its role as a cultural institution. Receiving support from Canadian Heritage to upgrade our current DOS-based collections management system to newer database software means that we will now have the ability to share our rich permanent collection of contemporary and historical works with the public and other museum professionals online. The opportunity to upgrade to a newer database will also enable the Kamloops Art Gallery to more efficiently meet accepted museum standards for collections information management in the areas of cataloguing acquisitions, tracking incoming and outgoing loans, and exhibitions management. This assistance will make a world of difference to our operations both internally and externally."
