Woot.com Celebrates Its 10th Birthday with Epic Game, Larger-than-Life Deals, and a Feline George Takei

Woot.com, one of the first daily deal sites on the Internet, is celebrating its 10th birthday today by offering unbelievable deals, free shipping on most items, and the Internet’s first retail playing game (RPG) featuring George Takei.

“Ultimately, we are giving our customers what they really want, and that’s great deals within a fun and engaging shopping experience,” said John Alteio, general manager, Woot. “I think they’ll be pleased to find that we really have the best prices on our deals, and hopefully, they’ll laugh at our jokes, too.”

The World of Wootcrap, the Internet’s first RPG, invites users to discover the mysteries and surprises Woot has in store for its 10th birthday. The game, which is narrated by and features a feline likeness of “Star Trek” actor and Internet celebrity George Takei, places players in rival clans as they interactively battle.

To commemorate 10 years of great deals, Woot will also be offering some of the best prices ever seen on the site, with savings on the Dyson DC25 vacuum at $179.99 and hourly deals on top products including:

  • Char-Broil 36,000 BTU 3-Burner Gas Grill for $79.99 (65 percent off list price)
  • Cuisinart 11-piece Stainless Steel Cookware Set for $97.99 (51 percent off list price)
  • 1st Gen iPad Mini 32 GB WiFi for $299.99 ($130 off list price)
  • Margaritaville blenders for $229.99 ($130 off list price)
  • Vizio 40” 1080p Smart LED Refurbished TV for $299.99

In lieu of traditional party favors, Woot will also be selling 10,000 of its legendary Bags of Crap (BoC), a blind grab bag of items. BoCs typically sell out in seconds, but Woot is providing loyal shoppers with their best chance ever to snare one of these elusive and mysterious packages, which can contain anything from Texas air to a big-screen TV. Over the course of its decade of operation, Woot has sold more than 64,000 BoCs, which were created as a way to clear odds and ends from its warehouse.

To follow Woot’s birthday party via live stream please visit woot.com or youtube.com/wootchannel; festivities will be broadcast live from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. PDT.

Providing the needed data for application development and testing is a huge headache for most organizations. The problems are often the same across companies - speed, quality, cost, and control. Provisioning data can take days or weeks, every time a refresh is required. Using dummy data leads to quality problems. DevOps tends to focus on the relationship between Dev and Ops, putting an emphasis on the ops and application infrastructure. But that’s changing with microservices architectures. In her session at DevOps Summit, Lori MacVittie, Evangelist for F5 Networks, will focus on how microservices are changing the underlying architectures needed to scale, secure and deliver applications based on highly distributed (micro) services and why that means an expansion into “the network” for DevOps.
Choosing the right cloud for your workloads is a balancing act that can cost your organization time, money and aggravation - unless you get it right the first time. Economics, speed, performance, accessibility, administrative needs and security all play a vital role in dictating your approach to the cloud. Without knowing the right questions to ask, you could wind up paying for capacity you'll never need or underestimating the resources required to run your applications.
