TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 07/16/14 -- "Member of Provincial Parliament Garfield Dunlop (Simcoe-North) is continuing a campaign of misinformation against the College of Trades that was soundly rejected by the voters of this province just six weeks ago," said Patrick Dillon, Business Manager of the Provincial Building and Construction Trades Council of Ontario.
"During the provincial election, Garfield Dunlop made inaccurate claims about apprenticeship ratios in hopes of getting support to abolish the College," Dillon pointed out. "Now, having been rebuffed in the election, he wants to continue to fight on an issue where he is factually and morally out of sync."
"The College of Trades exists to recognize and professionalize the industry. Instead of politicians deciding what the ratio of apprentices should be, industry experts using evidence-based research make those recommendations," noted Dillon.
According to the College of Trades, all 33 construction trades subject to ratios have been reviewed, with 14 of the ratios being reduced. 18 didn't change, and 5 of the 18 were already at a 1:1 ratio. Only one ratio went up (Floor Covering Installer). All trades subject to ratios will be reviewed again starting in 2016.
"The College of Trades is moving in the right direction and will soon stand on par with other self-regulating Colleges such as those of the Teachers, Nurses and Doctors. We need to give it time and the resources to do its job," Dillon concluded.
The Provincial Building and Construction Trades Council of Ontario represents 150,000 trades workers throughout the province.
