IRD Introduces New Sensor Technology at NATMEC Conference

SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN -- (Marketwired) -- 07/17/14 -- International Road Dynamics Inc. (TSX:IRD)(IRD) introduced a new sensor technology and traffic data collection solution at this year's NATMEC conference in Chicago and the ITS Europe conference in Helsinki, Finland. The VectorSense(TM) sensor suite provides a new measurement technology for traffic data collection, Commercial Vehicle Operations (CVO), and toll road operations. The VectorSense sensor suite is a highly accurate in-road tire and vehicle footprint measurement technology. When used with IRD's VI2M(TM) (Vehicle Information in Motion(TM)) traffic data system, the VectorSense sensor suite provides a previously unavailable level of vehicle traffic information.

A VectorSense sensor suite installation, which can normally be completed in five hours or less, consists of three 1.4" wide sensors, spaced approximately 9" apart in concrete, along with one or two inductive loops. This sensor suite is used by the VI2M traffic data system to provide highly accurate tire and vehicle footprint and speed information while detecting and accurately identifying motorcycles and bicycles, single / dual / super single tire configurations and under inflated tires, all at highway speeds. In addition, it can be used in closed and open road tolling (ORT) applications for accurate vehicle classification and measurement and can be used for freight source / destination analysis.

On July 1st, Randy Hanson, IRD's VP and COO, gave a presentation at NATMEC focusing on the VectorSense sensor suite's potential to provide enhanced vehicle signature information to complement traditional data collection methods. "The VectorSense sensor suite also provides data that satisfies Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) requirements. These data inputs could only be estimated in the past," said Hanson. "The VectorSense sensor suite has the potential to provide formative change to the way transportation agencies monitor roads, and we were pleased to see strong interest from both traffic data users and road designers at this conference. Final testing of the VectorSense sensor suite is currently in process and once this is completed, IRD looks forward to working with existing and new customers to use this technology to advance the capabilities of their Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and solutions."
