80 per cent of Canadians are Filing Online!

End-of-filing season report

OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 07/17/14 -- The Honourable Kerry-Lynne D. Findlay, P.C., Q.C., M.P., Minister of National Revenue, announced today that 80 per cent of Canadians filed their income tax return electronically this year, an increase of 6 per cent over last year. As of July 2, 2014, over 21 million Canadians took advantage of Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) electronic filing services, up from 20 million this time last year.

By providing services electronically, the Government is reducing red tape and making it easier for Canadians to interact with us. Canadians can make use of the CRA's safe, secure online services when it's convenient for them, from wherever they are in the world. This year, 54% of taxpayers also received their refund by direct deposit.

Minister Findlay thanked all Canadians who filed their income tax and benefit return on time, and also announced that the average refund for the 2013 taxation year was $1,655 - up from $1,646 in the 2012 tax year.

If you missed the filing deadline, the CRA reminds you that it is in your best interest to file as soon as possible to receive benefit payments such as the GST/HST credit or the Canada child tax benefit, and to avoid paying penalties and interest charges.
