REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN -- (Marketwired) -- 07/20/14 -- After much anticipation, today marks the official opening of the 8th North American Indigenous Games in beautiful Regina, Saskatchewan.
Tonight, more than 4,300 Aboriginal athletes and artists will gather together to celebrate the opening of the largest multisport/cultural Aboriginal youth games in North America. The Games provide a unique opportunity for Aboriginal youth to compete in a variety of sport events and take part in cultural celebrations.
The North American Indigenous Games will have a significant and positive impact on Canada's Aboriginal athletes, coaches, officials, and sport leaders. Our Government is committed to working together in conjunction with provincial and territorial governments to contribute to the health, wellness, and quality of life of Aboriginal people through programs that promote participation in sport.
Our contribution of up to $3.5 million will help stage this year's North American Indigenous Games. Additional funding has also been provided to the provinces and territories to assist their teams in travelling to and from Regina.
Good luck to all participants, and to the Canadian athletes and artists in particular. You are an enormous source of pride for all Canadians.
