SME Education Foundation Awards Scholarships at Skills Canada National Competition to Students Pursuing Degrees in Advanced Manufacturing

DEARBORN, MI--(Marketwired - July 21, 2014) - The SME Education Foundation is pleased to announce its award winners for the 2014 Skills Canada National Competition in the Machining Categories. Winning students were awarded $2,000 for the gold, $1,500 for the silver and $1,000 for the bronze. The scholarships were awarded to nine students who are pursuing machining technology certification or closely related fields.

The SCNC is the only national, multitrade and technology competition for students and apprentices in Canada. Each year, more than 500 young people from all regions of Canada come to SCNC to participate in more than 40 skilled trade and technology contests.

"Our partnership with the SME Education Foundation adds incredible value to manufacturing education," said Gail Vent, director of business development for Skills/Compétences Canada. "Because of the donation of the latest technology, equipment and expertise to the Skills Canada National Competition, schools across the nation will adapt teaching methods and curriculum to rise to the standards set by SME." 

The SME Education Foundation awarded scholarships to three students in each of these competitions: Precision Machining, Precision Machining-Post-Secondary School and CNC Machining.

  • Precision Machining-Post-Secondary School winners: Luc Bergeron of St. Francoise, Quebec, won gold; Cory Mailman of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, won silver; and Mohamed Rahim of Mississauga, Ontario, won bronze.
  • CNC Machining winners: Metika Olanriksupak of Burnbary, British Columbia, won gold; Trevor Fandrick of Calmar, Alberta, won silver; and Tyler Magri of Churchill, Ontario, won bronze.
  • Precision Machining winners: Carl Bouvrette of Ile-Perrot, Quebec, won gold; Alex Hoelzli of Welland, Ontario, won silver; and Jorn Peeters of Calmar, Alberta, won bronze.

By providing a forum where Canadian youth can compete against each another at the national level, SCNC provides hands-on work experience related to skilled trades and technology careers. Through these competitions, Skills/Compétences Canada also seeks to raise awareness about skilled trades and technology sectors to all Canadian youth and their influencers.
