Racers From Around the World Head to Akron for the 77th All-American Soap Box Derby Championship

AKRON, OH--(Marketwired - July 22, 2014) - As summer continues to bring families together with sun, fun and outdoor activities, it's finally time for the 77th FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby. Known as the greatest amateur-racing event in the world, the Championship event has more than 10,000 spectators each year. On Saturday, July 26 in Akron, Ohio more than 500 racers from across the United States, Canada, and around the world, will fulfill their need for speed. Racers will reach speeds of up to 35 miles per hour while soaring down 989-feet of track, at the world-famous Derby Downs.

The Soap Box Derby season runs year-round with races taking place in over 120 districts in the United States, and overseas. Winners go on to compete at the AASBD World Championship in Akron, Ohio. The level of competition continues to grow and paves the way for the next generation of racers.

Racers between the ages of seven and 17 spend months building their gravity-powered racecars and competing in local Soap Box Derby competitions until it is finally time to qualify for the All-American Soap Box Derby Championship. There are Local and Rally winners in each division. Local winners automatically qualify for the championship race, while Rally racers collect points to earn the chance to compete for a national title.

Soap Box Derby festivities kicked off on Sunday, July 20, with the first Derby Downs 5K Run/Walk down the world famous Derby Downs track. Race week includes a myriad of activities for racers and their families as well as spectators. In addition to the races, there is a parade featuring the drivers and their cars, a rally, clinics, time trials, and side-trips to attractions such as Cedar Point. The week of excitement culminates on Saturday with the World Championship races for each division.
