Trailcon Leasing's new Vice President, Service & Operations, hit the ground running when he joined the company in April, quickly supporting ambitious expansion plans and rolling out an upgraded mobile repair order (MRO) system to improve communication and customer service.

Transportation industry specialist Paul Merryweather was up for the job, after spending six years in operations and business development for courier Atripco Delivery Service and the 25 years prior as Operations Manager for All-Ontario Transport Ltd.

Trailcon President Alan Boughton said Merryweather's experience in the field is "outstanding," particularly in fleet management and maintenance.

"Paul arrived at just the right time," Boughton said. "We are full steam ahead with expansion in the western provinces while keeping an eye on all the ways we can continue to improve our systems and therefore our service to customers. Paul is a respected leader and has already become part of the team."

Many members of that team have been part of Trailcon operations for 10, 15, even 20 years.

"That shows you their dedication," Merryweather said. "I've always been impressed with how Al Boughton has run and grown Trailcon. It's a solid, supportive group of people committed to the company's success. It didn't take very long for me to blend in."

Trailcon owns a fleet of 6,500 units, servicing companies such as ATS Healthcare, Canada Cartage, and National Fast Freight, as well as some of the largest grocery and retail chains in the country. Its dedicated fleet maintenance operation, including 75 technicians, looks after an additional 8,500 customer-owned units across Canada.

Merryweather holds the CCLP® designation (CITT-Certified Logistics Professional) and is an Ontario Trucking Association Certified Trucking Manager (CTM). He said his desire to get back into a role involving maintenance was a factor in his move to Trailcon.

"I have been following the success story of Trailcon since 1992," he said. "With current expansion across Ontario and to the west, I wanted play a role that would ensure that our operations support growth now and into the future."

In February, Boughton announced Trailcon's purchase of Calgary-based Hubs Trailer Service, expanding the Trailcon network of fleet support services and adding a 15,000-square-foot facility housing eight service bays.

"Our ongoing focus is to acquire more companies, as well as build more Trailcon locations," Boughton said. "We will reach new markets and build market share where we already do business. A balanced approach, not just growth by acquisition, will allow us to reach business goals and improve service coast to coast."

Trailcon has operations in Mississauga and Cornwall in Ontario, and Edmonton and Calgary in Alberta. An impressive new location for the Mississauga head office is currently under construction.

DevOps is under attack because developers don’t want to mess with infrastructure. They will happily own their code into production, but want to use platforms instead of raw automation. That’s changing the landscape that we understand as DevOps with both architecture concepts (CloudNative) and process redefinition (SRE). Rob Hirschfeld’s recent work in Kubernetes operations has led to the conclusion that containers and related platforms have changed the way we should be thinking about DevOps and...
The Internet of Things will challenge the status quo of how IT and development organizations operate. Or will it? The next XaaS is CICDaaS. Why? Because CICD saves developers a huge amount of time. CD is an especially great option for projects that require multiple and frequent contributions to be integrated. But… securing CICD best practices is an emerging, essential, yet little understood practice for DevOps teams and their Cloud Service Providers. The only way to get CICD to work in a highly secure environment takes collaboration, patience and persistence. Building CICD in the cloud requires rigorous ar...
Companies are harnessing data in ways we once associated with science fiction. Analysts have access to a plethora of visualization and reporting tools, but considering the vast amount of data businesses collect and limitations of CPUs, end users are forced to design their structures and systems with limitations. Until now. As the cloud toolkit to analyze data has evolved, GPUs have stepped in to massively parallel SQL, visualization and machine learning.
"Evatronix provides design services to companies that need to integrate the IoT technology in their products but they don't necessarily have the expertise, knowledge and design team to do so," explained Adam Morawiec, VP of Business Development at Evatronix, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at @ThingsExpo, held Oct 31 – Nov 2, 2017, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
To get the most out of their data, successful companies are not focusing on queries and data lakes, they are actively integrating analytics into their operations with a data-first application development approach. In his session at @BigDataExpo, Jack Norris, Senior Vice President, Data and Applications at MapR Technologies, reviewed best practices to ...

Large industrial manufacturing organizations are adopting the agile principles of cloud software companies. The industrial manufacturing development process has not scaled over time. Enterprises are adopting Kubernetes to accelerate the development and the delivery of cloud-native applications. However, sharing a Kubernetes cluster between members of the same team can be challenging. And, sharing clusters across multiple teams is even harder. Kubernetes offers several constructs to help implement segmentation and isolation. However, these primitives can be complex to understand and apply. As a result, it’s becoming common for enterprises to end up with several clusters. Thi...
