Even More Efficient and Dynamic: The New Porsche Cayenne

Continuing a success story

A sharper design, increased efficiency and an host of standard features are the key characteristics of the new Porsche Cayenne. As a sports car among sport utility vehicles (SUVs), it offers seating for five, an extensive list of high-end features, and plenty of space for a lot of driving fun.

The new Cayenne will launch on the Canadian market in four versions: Cayenne Diesel, Cayenne S, Cayenne Turbo, and - a world premiere - the Cayenne S E-Hybrid, the first plug-in hybrid in the premium SUV segment. This model, along with the Panamera S E-Hybrid and the 918 Spyder, make Porsche the world's only carmaker to offer three plug-in hybrid models. The Cayenne S benefits from a new 3.6-litre V6 bi-turbo engine.

The Cayenne is a unique success story at Porsche. The company introduced the first generation in 2002. This vehicle made the idea of a sports car in the SUV segment a reality - and it set standards right from the start. Sales have exceeded all expectations: Over 276,000 first generation vehicles were produced (2002 to 2010), and around 303,000 units of the second, which was introduced in 2010, have already been produced so far. So the Cayenne is not only boosting profitable growth at Porsche, it is also creating a solid economic foundation for investments in future generations of the entire sports cars lineup.

Sharpened design

The design of the front body, the front fenders and the hood are all new. So are the air blades: These fins on the right and left of the vehicle's front end efficiently guide cooling air to the intercoolers. The bi-xenon headlights standard in Diesel and S models feature "hovering" four-point LED daytime running lights. The Cayenne Turbo offers standard LED headlights with the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS).

The rear section was also thoroughly updated: In addition to the layout of the rear lights now creating a three-dimensional effect, the brake lights and license plate recess, tailgate handle, and lights were also fine-tuned. A power tailgate is standard.

Inside, the driver now gets a new multifunction sport steering wheel with shift paddles as standard; its look and functions are based on the steering wheel of the 918 Spyder. The rear seating system is even more comfortable and seat ventilation can be ordered as an option for the rear seats for the first time.

Better efficiency

New Cayenne models feature the more advanced "auto stop-start function plus" (except Diesel) and optimized thermal management. Active cooling air flaps located behind the middle air inlet are now being used for the first time in the Cayenne. They are automatically opened or closed according to the specific driving situation and cooling needs. When closed, they reduce air drag, thereby improving fuel efficiency.

The Cayenne S E-Hybrid is the first plug-in hybrid in the premium SUV segment. Compared to the previous Cayenne S Hybrid, the new model has a 10.9 kWh lithium-ion traction battery, which enables an all-electric driving range of 18 to 36 km. The electric motor power was more than doubled: from 47 hp to 95 hp. The combined fuel consumption is now 3.4 l/100 km according to the NEDC. The three-litre V6 supercharged engine (333 hp) and the electric motor (95 hp) produce a combined system power of 416 hp at 5,500 rpm and a total system torque of 435 lb-ft from 1,250 to 4,000 rpm. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is accomplished in 5.9 seconds to a top speed of 243 km/h. The top speed in all-electric driving is 125 km/h. The traction battery can be charged from the electric power grid or while driving.

The new Porsche-developed 3.6-litre V6 biturbo engine of the Cayenne S returns fuel consumption figures between 9.5 and 9.8 l/100 km, according to the NEDC. This represents one litre less than with the previous V8 engine. The new twin-turbo V6 develops 420 hp 6,000 rpm - a gain of 20 hp. A total of 406 lb-ft of torque (+ 37 lb-ft) is available from 1,350 to 4,500 rpm. The power density per litre of displacement is now 117 hp, a nearly 40 percent gain. With its standard eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission, the Cayenne S accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.5 seconds (5.4 with the Sport Chrono package) - 0.4 seconds faster than the previous Cayenne S. The vehicle's top speed is now 259 km/h (gain of one km/h).

The Cayenne Turbo is powered by a 4.8-litre bi-turbo V8 engine that produces 520 hp at 6,000 rpm and 553 ft-lb of torque from 2,250 to 4,000 rpm. The acceleration from zero to 100 km/h comes in just 4.5 seconds (4.4 with the Sport Chrono package). Its top speed is 279 km/h. Fuel consumption is 11.2 to 11.5 l/100 km.

The diesel version of the Cayenne combines sportiness with even better fuel efficiency. The three-litre V6 engine in the Cayenne Diesel produces 240 hp at 4,000 rpm and has a fuel consumption of 6.6 to 6.8 l/100 km. The emission-control system is now equipped with selective catalyst recuperation (SCR). With a generous 428 lb-ft of torque available from 1,750 to 2,500 rpm, the vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds (7.2 with the Sport Chrono package) to a top speed of 221 km/h.

The new Cayenne models will launch this fall with pricing starting at $71,300 for the Cayenne Diesel, $83,700 for the Cayenne S, and the Cayenne Turbo $128,200. The Cayenne S E-Hybrid pricing will start at a very competitive $86,800.
