ST. ALBANS, Vt., July 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- In a new white paper, Superior Technical Ceramics (STC) has outlined how Zirconia Toughened Alumina (ZTA) is similar to Yttria-stabilized Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystal (YTZP) in that it possesses a similar crystal structure that, under applied stress, performs in ways that toughens its overall structure.
When Zirconia particles are added to an alumina matrix, that matrix will change under applied stress from a tetragonal structure to a monoclinic structure. This transformation results in an expansion of the volume, compressing the surrounding crack in the alumina matrix. Like YTZP, this stops the crack and restricts it from growing, resulting in a stronger and tougher material than regular alumina.
