Through Partnership with the PGA of America and Turner Sports, Consumer Electronics Innovator Samsung Launches Interactive App for Golf Enthusiasts and On-site Experiential Area
Samsung Electronics America, Inc., a market leader and award-winning innovator in consumer electronics, unveiled its PGA Championship TV App, the first-ever event-based golf experience app designed for the Samsung Smart TV platform, offering a new and interactive way for golf fans to immerse themselves in the PGA Championship (August 7-10). Available on 2013 and 2014 Samsung Smart TVs, the new app developed in collaboration with Turner Sports, gives viewers access to not only scoring, player and course information, but also exclusive behind-the-scenes and tournament-related content from the PGA Championship. The PGA Championship app is also available on select Samsung Galaxy mobile devices for those who want to stay up-to-date with the latest action on the go.
From the very first shot at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, the PGA Championship TV App will bring the action right to user’s homes. Consumers will be able to dive deeper into the competition from the comfort of their couches using their Samsung Smart TV and Galaxy mobile devices for exclusive content, including, but not limited to:
- Broadcast Mode, which allows users to complement and customize their PGA Championship viewing experience. While watching the championship (on TNT and CBS), Broadcast Mode will let users toggle between alternate LIVE video feeds (i.e. Par 3 Cam and Marquee Group), launch an interactive leaderboard, and keep tabs on their favorite golfers. It is the first time this technology has been offered in the sport of golf.
- Pick the Hole Location Challenge Hosted by Jack Nicklaus, which lets users cast a live vote for the hole location to be used on No. 16 during the final round of the PGA Championship on August 10. For the first time during a major sporting event, fans using Samsung Smart TVs can vote in real time using interactive content triggered during the live broadcast from August 7-9, using their Samsung TV remote. Voting will conclude August 9 at 7 p.m. EDT.
- Multiscreen Functionality, which allows consumers to seamlessly pair their TV and mobile devices through the companion Android app to create a robust golf experience. They can view the live championship action and exclusive content on their mobile devices, share the action with family and friends by casting live video streams, custom leaderboards and event highlights to their 2014 Smart TVs.
“Samsung is thrilled to partner with the PGA and bring the sport of golf to life for Samsung Smart TV and mobile device users,” says Joe Stinziano, Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics America. “Whether using a tablet, mobile phone or one of our latest Smart TVs, we continue to look at ways to elevate the sports viewing experience at home. The PGA Championship App is a great example of how Samsung can connect its products across categories to bring golf fans closer to the game they love.”
During the PGA Championship, Samsung will be on-site at the championship with a massive experiential area. Featuring 23 Curved UHD TVs, as well as the latest Galaxy Tab S devices and NX compact system cameras, the Samsung Experience allows attendees to catch up on the action, share moments from the day’s events and even recharge not only themselves but also their devices. In particular, they will be able to watch live footage of the championship on a super-sized, crystal-clear, 16-foot curved display consisting of nine 65” Curved UHD TVs or participate in a “Perfect Shot Challenge,” rallying golf fans to take a ‘chip shot’ from a custom-designed 13th hole bunker.
“The innovations from Samsung and Turner Sports in conjunction with the 2014 PGA Championship, represent the next generation of consumer electronics,” says PGA CEO Pete Bevacqua. Whether on site, at home, or on their mobile devices, fans will be connected to our championships unlike ever before.”
As part of the expanded “The Curve Changes Everything” ad campaign, Samsung will feature TV spots during the PGA Championship telecast, and highlight the top play during each day of competition with the “Samsung Shot of the Day.” In addition, the campaign will feature a print presence in the August issue of Golf Digest, digital components on PGA.com and Yahoo! Sports’ Golf Channel, and out-of-home (OOH) components.
