EDMUNDSTON, NEW BRUNSWICK -- (Marketwired) -- 08/08/14 -- Department of Canadian Heritage
The Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development and Member of Parliament (Madawaska-Restigouche), took part today in the opening of the 5th Congres mondial acadien (CMA), on behalf of the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.
This ceremony launches two weeks of social and cultural activities, shows, conferences, thematic meetings and family reunions.
The CMA 2014 is taking place until August 24 in Acadia of the Lands and Forests-the territory ranging from northwestern New Brunswick to Temiscouata in Quebec and to the northern part of Maine in the United-States. The Government of Canada supports this major event that brings significant social, cultural and economic benefits to the whole region.
-- The Government of Canada provides more than $4 million to the CMA 2014 through programs of the Department of Canadian Heritage and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. -- The Canada Border Services Agency and the Department of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development are also important partners of the CMA 2014. -- For more than 400 years, Acadians have been contributing to the economic, cultural and social vitality of Canada. -- Under the theme "Acadia of the World," the CMA 2014 invites Acadians from the whole world to gather in celebration of Acadian identity and pride. -- The CMA has been taking place every five years since 1994.
