IRVINE, CA--(Marketwired - August 08, 2014) - Founder and President of Project Insight, project and portfolio management software, Steve West, member of the Irvine NOVA Masters and the oldest man to qualify for the US Olympic trials in 2012, participated in The English Channel and Open Water Relay Tuesday morning.
The relay is approximately 21 miles and one of the longest held channel swimming records: 6 hours and 52 minutes by the 1990 USA Swimming National Open Water Team.
West joined the 6-member 40+ year-old relay team, Total Immersion, in the English Channel (or the EC6), in an attempt to be a part of the fastest relay swim ever across the English Channel. Also on the team were former English Channel record holder Christof Wandratsch, Great Britain Masters standouts Andrew Chamberlain, Dave Warren, FINA masters world record holder Kirsten Cameron, and Bernie Zeruhn.
The English Channel is notorious for rapidly changing weather and currents. The EC6 started out strong and confident, but the tides started to turn with 5 km to go. As time went on, the tidal flow became stronger. The team reached the finish point at 7 hours 3 minutes, 11 minutes shy of the record.
Among the tens of thousands of swimmers who have pushed their limits in the English Channel, this group of 40+ year-olds has still accomplished an amazing feat in a remarkable time.
