AT&T Confirms Plans To Deliver U-verse® With AT&T GigaPower(SM) In Miami

Customers in Miami Will Receive Benefits Tied to All-Fiber Infrastructure for High-Speed Internet, TV Services

MIAMI, Aug. 12, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T* today confirmed it will expand its ultra-fast AT&T GigaPower network to the City of Miami. The all-fiber network will provide services featuring symmetrical upload and download broadband speeds up to 1 gigabit per second, and AT&T's most advanced TV services to consumers and small businesses.

AT&T is deploying additional fiber and electronics to the existing network in Miami to meet the growing demand for ultra-fast broadband.  The network enhancements will enable customers to have access to AT&T's fastest Internet speeds available to consumers.**

Local residents and small business customers on the AT&T GigaPower network will also experience cutting-edge TV services with the ability to watch and record five simultaneous HD streams, and its largest capacity DVR at one terabyte of storage.

"Miami is proud to be the first city in Florida and the metropolitan Miami area where AT&T has announced it will build the AT&T GigaPower network," said Mayor Tomas Regalado. "The deployment of ultra-high-speed broadband service will support innovation, our businesses, and our residents and will eventually further economic development in our community."

"For well over a century AT&T has been committed to bringing the latest, most advanced technology to our Miami customers and today's announcement is the latest step in fulfilling that commitment," said Joe York, President of AT&T Florida – External Affairs. "Smart public policy decisions, such as adopting competitively neutral local ordinances and modernizing state regulatory statutes, play a key role in driving investment. Today's announcement reflects the wisdom of the forward-looking leadership of Mayor Tomas Regalado and other state and local leaders who have worked diligently for many years to create a public policy climate that encourages investment in advanced technology in Miami and in Florida."

Specific locations of availability and pricing for the Miami market will be announced at a later date.

On April 21, 2014, AT&T announced a major initiative to expand its ultra-fast AT&T GigaPower fiber network to up to 100 candidate cities and municipalities across 25 markets nationwide.  As part of that announcement, AT&T said it is also considering other Miami areas – Hialeah, Hollywood, Homestead, Opa-Locka, and Pompano Beach as candidate municipalities for the service.

The U-verse with AT&T GigaPower network launched to tens of thousands of households in Austin and surrounding communities in December 2013 and customers in the Austin area are able to access speeds up to 1 gigabit per second.  Since consumer demand has exceeded expectations, AT&T will expand the network to double the households in the Austin area this year and will launch the all-fiber AT&T GigaPower network in Dallas and Fort Worth this summer. Plans have also been announced to deliver U-verse with AT&T GigaPower to Charlotte, Greensboro, Houston, Nashville, Overland Park, Kan., Raleigh-Durham, San Antonio, and Winston-Salem.

Additionally, AT&T has committed that upon approval of its proposed acquisition of DIRECTV, the company will expand the AT&T GigaPower network to an additional 2 million customer locations. All of these 2 million locations are over and above what the company announced in April.

Other AT&T initiatives in 2014 include:

  • Enhance and expand its 4G LTE wireless network, the nation's most reliable 4G LTE network.**** AT&T 4G LTE wireless service is available in 25 major cities across Florida.
  • Expand its U-verse footprint to more areas of Southern Florida. U-verse is currently available in the Fort Lauderdale, Kissimmee, Miami, Orlando, Pompano Beach and surrounding communities.

AT&T invested more than $2.75 billion in its Florida wireless and wireline networks from 2011 through 2013.

AT&T has served the state of Florida for 134 years and employs more than 15,000 people in the state.
