AUSTIN, Texas, Aug. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- A new device designed to prevent infants from being dropped accidentally is now available from Austin, Texas-based Infant Guard, LLC.
The Snuggle HelperTM was developed to address the problem of newborn babies dropped in home and hospital settings, often by exhausted parents who become drowsy while feeding or holding their newborns.
"The problem of infant falls has been more visible in recent years, as hospitals strive to achieve Baby Friendly, USA accreditation. As a result, young infants spend far more time with mothers and family members in hospital settings than was the case 20 years ago" said Andy Gillam, president of Infant Guard. "Snuggle HelperTM is the first product to address a unique vulnerability in the U.S. population."
The Snuggle HelperTM is a new class of garment that enhances safety when feeding or snuggling young infants. It is made up of two parts – a sash that fastens around the wearer's torso to provide a stable platform, and a bassinet that supports the infant. Both components are made of a cotton-canvas material and are available in a range of colors and sizes.
The phenomenon of dropped babies, especially young infants under 12 weeks of age is a persistent problem in hospitals and homes. Serious injury can occur when an infant falls from a height of one meter -- the approximate distance of most falls determined by a 2008 study of dropped infants. In addition, several other studies have determined that many infant falls are never reported because parents are embarrassed, or are only reported when an infant shows visible signs of injury. Serious injuries such as skull fractures or hemorrhages can occur even without visible signs, however. "It's a phenomenon that must be addressed, and Snuggle HelperTM is an ideal solution," said Gillam.
Infant Guard was founded in Austin in 2014. Further information on the Snuggle HelperTM is available at www.infant-guard.com. Snuggle Helper™ is patent pending.
