NEW CASTLE, Pa., Aug. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Axion Power International, Inc. (OTC QB: AXPW), a developer of advanced lead-carbon PbC® batteries, energy storage systems and frequency regulation systems, today announced that it will showcase its patented PbC technology and the advantages it believes its PbC batteries provide to electric and hybrid vehicles at the Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Technology Conference and The Battery Show 2014 being held September 16-18, 2014 in Novi, MI. Mike Romeo, Axion Power's Manager of Research and Development, will be a panel member of Powertrain Technologies for Transport, Commercial Vehicles/Trucks and Heavy Hybrids and will make a featured presentation on Wednesday, Sept. 17 in the Opal Ballroom, as part of Track 3, Session 1 of the conference.
Also featured at the conference will be ePower's modified Sterling day cab tractor, a heavy duty Class 8 truck that includes an engine-dominant hybrid drivetrain for long-haul trucking, a diesel electric generator and Axion's PbC batteries. The design utilizes a string of 56 PbC batteries in the trucks to assist in powering the series diesel electric hybrid drive train system. The batteries provide a complementary power source, and assist in equalizing fuel consumption over various terrains and distances and in varying driving conditions.
"Working in tandem with the ePower system, we believe our PbC batteries are demonstrating the potential economic value and environmental impact they potentially bring to the trucking industry," said Axion Power CEO David DiGiacinto. "Our testing is mainly focused on the 55,000-pound weight class for trucks, which we believe includes the majority of cargo trucks currently on the road. We believe that the use of series hybrid systems in both the retrofit of existing trucks, and in the manufacture of new trucks, presents an important potential market opportunity for Axion, given that there are approximately 2.45 million Class 7 and 8 trucks in the U.S. today, of which we believe 400,000 are classified as rebuilds.

About Axion Power International, Inc.
Axion has developed and patented a next generation energy storage device that won the prestigious Frost & Sullivan Technology Award for North America in the field of lead-acid batteries. According to Frost & Sullivan, Axion's new PbC® batteries have "the potential to revitalize the lead-acid battery industry by breathing new life into an established technology that has not been well suited to the requirements of important new applications like hybrid electric vehicles and renewable power."
Axion Power International, Inc. believes it is an industry leader in the field of lead carbon energy storage technologies. Axion believes its new PbC battery technology is the only class of advanced battery that can be assembled on existing lead-acid battery production lines throughout the world utilizing Axion's proprietary activated carbon electrodes. Axion's future goal, after filling their plant's lead-carbon battery production capacity, is to become the leading supplier of carbon electrode assemblies for the global lead-acid battery industry.
