Fiscal Year 2014: The Power of Booz Allen Hamilton’s Innovation Stands Out in “Reaching Forward: Inventing the Future”

The challenges that face Booz Allen Hamilton’s (NYSE: BAH) clients are as diverse as their organizations. Yet, one thread unites them—a pressing need for unique solutions combined with funding, workforce, and resource constraints—whether it is the U.S. Army protecting globally deployed conventional and Special Operations forces from improvised explosive devices, senior executives at Wall Street firms developing cyber risk management plans or the Department of Labor consolidating its information technology function all the while dramatically improving service in the wake of federal mandates.

Every day Booz Allen generates innovative ideas that meet demands such as these from a variety of sources, including partnerships with start-ups, strategic alliances with third parties and the creation of the Strategic Innovation Group, which began with an initial $40 million investment and is capturing smart thinking from across the firm, building solutions around the strongest ideas. Also, annual employee events such as the Ideas Festival and its Combustion Chamber programming reflect the firm’s culture of collaboration and its unique approach to innovation.

Booz Allen Hamilton’s approach to meeting these challenges is featured in its Fiscal Year 2014 annual report, “Reaching Forward: Inventing the Future,” available online at http://www.boozallen.com/about/annual-report/annual-report-fy2014. Documenting proud moments such as delivering efficiencies to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention to keep all children immunized and building a system for the U.S. Air Force to simulate aircraft flight operations and create a realistic, adaptable training system, the annual report showcases how Booz Allen’s 22,000 employees are committed to building on the firm’s legacy as the premiere consultancy by infusing innovation into client service.

In Fiscal 2014, Booz Allen marked its centennial anniversary and implemented its Vision 2020 strategy, pivoting its business toward new growth areas including cyber, technology and engineering, and the commercial and international markets. During this time, Booz Allen marked several accomplishments such as Training magazine naming its Cyber University Program as an Outstanding Training Initiative of 2013 and again being named to Fortune magazine’s list of “The World’s Most Admired Companies,” In 2014.

“One hundred years since our founding, Booz Allen today remains intensely focused on our clients’ core missions—and we are meeting a changing marketplace head on with pioneering, new technologies and a pivot to areas in which we see greater growth potential,” said Ralph W. Shrader, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer. “We are entering our second century with a deep commitment to our clients, our communities and to the veterans who serve us. Our continued investment in the future, which is illustrated in our annual report, has positioned Booz Allen to thrive.”

This year’s annual report features snapshots of high-impact work, including:

  • Mesh Technology Sets New Performance Standard for Wireless Technology – how Booz Allen’s support of the US Army Logistics Innovation Agency to develop technology that delivers near real-time tracking and visibility of data on vehicles, containers and assets improved efficiency and lowered costs
  • Security Framework Keeps Oil Flowing in the Middle East – how a cross-functional Booz Allen team supported the Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Operations (ADCO) in taking a proactive approach to managing its risk exposure to cyber threats by helping to create an innovative security program with the goal of achieving ISO 27001 certification
  • Long-Term Partnership Enhances Public Health and Safety – how Booz Allen’s 16-year relationship with the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) is assisting leadership in modernizing its IT portfolio, which has transformed the response process and expedited the timeline for the analysis and review of new vaccines for the market.

These and other case studies documenting team collaboration, innovation and client commitment are available throughout the annual report.
