DETROIT, Aug. 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Longtime partners Feed the Children and PepsiCo, along with other corporate partners, today helped out Detroit families in need providing them with food, essentials and Avon products. Sixteen hundred families visited Second Ebenezer Church (14601 Dequindre Road) and took home boxes containing food and basic essentials that filled four tractor-trailers.
Together, Feed the Children, PepsiCo, Walmart, Sam's Club and Avon provided enough supplemental food and essentials to help support 1,600 families of four for up to a week:
- 25 pounds of food
- 10 pounds of essentials
- A box of AVON products
- Frito-Lay variety packs and SunChips snacks
- Pepsi beverages
- Quaker Oatmeal and Life Cereal
- Fresh produce provided by Walmart and Sam's Club
This is the fifth year the partners joined together to help fight hunger in Detroit, in total supporting nearly 11,000 families over the years. The event was one of many Feed the Children has planned across the country, so instead of worrying about having enough to eat, thousands of kids can just be kids this summer.
Hunger's roots go deep, and it hurts kids every day - in every state in the U.S. In fact, one in seven Michigan households faces hunger. In addition, a stunning 60 percent of Detroit children live in poverty.
"We believe in a world where no child goes to bed hungry-- a world in which kids can be kids and grow up wide-eyed, curious, playful, eager to learn, strong, joyful, and full of dreams," said Kevin Hagan, Feed the Children president and CEO. "PepsiCo, its employees, and our friends at Walmart and Sam's Club are not just providing food and essentials today. They are helping kids be kids."
