Cloud Computing: A Quick Primer

Utilize the power of the cloud to transform your business

"The cloud will transform everything about technology." This statement is better suited for 20 years ago when the cloud was in its infancy. In 2014 the statement should be that "The cloud has taken over technology." Cloud computing has been around since the sixties believe it or not, but over the past few years the industry has recognized the concept better as more organizations are embracing cloud technology and more vendors are creating amazing cloud-based business solutions.

Who Is on the Cloud?
The cloud is the focus of every large technology vendor that we know of. The usual suspects include Microsoft, Google, IBM, Cisco, Apple, and SAP. All of these companies have one thing in common: a massive push towards cloud. In addition there are millions of other companies that offer products and services on the cloud through various cloud platforms. Typical examples are the Apple Store, Netflix, and Android Store.

What Does the Cloud Do?
The cloud leads into multiple different segments, such as mobility, collaboration, and infrastructure. Applications of the cloud vary from backing up your smart phone address book to an online storage vault to sharing data between multiple data centers for mission-critical exploration and drilling companies.

The cloud has started transforming the enterprise. A result of a growing internet bandwidth that is now available and possible due to technological advances, the cloud as an example forms the basis of hundreds of thousands of data centers that operate around the globe, leave alone the data that is exchanged, the solutions and applications hosted, and so on.

The Cloud for Your Organization
If your organization is planning to embark on a journey to the cloud and is still trying to figure out what it should do about the cloud, worry not, you are probably already using quite a few online services that are on the cloud. These include, among the ones previously mentioned, iCloud, Google Drive, Box.net, and Salesforce. At the enterprise level, the benefits of the cloud surpass common belief and your business can significantly ramp up by utilizing solutions and services on the cloud. Typical applications include information sharing, infrastructure solutions, collaboration, and communication.

To start your journey on the cloud try to analyze your organization's needs and requirements that would drive value. Match these needs to platforms and services available on the cloud and analyze the overall benefits and value, not just the financial savings.

Is the Cloud Growing?
Cloud platforms are here to stay and will grow tremendously in the next few years. It's estimated that by 2020 over $200 billion will be invested in cloud-based solutions and services. Start utilizing the power of the cloud to transform your business and begin propelling your organization into success and growth mode.

For organizations that have amassed large sums of software complexity, taking a microservices approach is the first step toward DevOps and continuous improvement / development. Integrating system-level analysis with microservices makes it easier to change and add functionality to applications at any time without the increase of risk. Apache Hadoop is emerging as a distributed platform for handling large and fast incoming streams of data. Predictive maintenance, supply chain optimization, and Internet-of-Things analysis are examples where Hadoop provides the scalable storage, processing, and analytics platform to gain meaningful insights from granular data that is typically only valuable from a large-scale, aggregate view. One architecture useful for capturing and analyzing streaming data is the Lambda Architecture, represent...
My team embarked on building a data lake for our sales and marketing data to better understand customer journeys. This required building a hybrid data pipeline to connect our cloud CRM with the new Hadoop Data Lake. One challenge is that IT was not in a position to provide support until we proved value and marketing did not have the experience, so we embarked on the journey ourselves within the product marketing team for our line of business within Progress. In his session at @BigDataExpo, Sum...
Things are changing so quickly in IoT that it would take a wizard to predict which ecosystem will gain the most traction. In order for IoT to reach its potential, smart devices must be able to work together. Today, there are a slew of interoperability standards being promoted by big names to make this happen: HomeKit, Brillo and Alljoyn. Adding public cloud resources to an existing application can be a daunting process. The tools that you currently use to manage the software and hardware outside the cloud aren’t always the best tools to efficiently grow into the cloud. All of the major configuration management tools have cloud orchestration plugins that can be leveraged, but there are also cloud-native tools that can dramatically improve the efficiency of managing your application lifecycle.
Providing the needed data for application development and testing is a huge headache for most organizations. The problems are often the same across companies - speed, quality, cost, and control. Provisioning data can take days or weeks, every time a refresh is required. Using dummy data leads to quality problems. Creating physical copies of large data sets and sending them to distributed teams of developers eats up expensive storage and bandwidth resources. And, all of these copies proliferating...
DevOps is often described as a combination of technology and culture. Without both, DevOps isn't complete.
