Protecting Your Business from a DDoS Attack

-- Increase in distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks has driven the need to mitigate risk, finds Frost & Sullivan 

MOUNTAIN VIEW, California, Aug. 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks are growing in scale and sophistication, becoming a top tool for hackers. As these attacks are difficult to stop without purpose-built platforms, DDoS mitigation solutions are rapidly gaining traction among businesses of all sizes. Government and industry regulations that mandate proactive investments in DDoS mitigation will further propel market development.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan, Analysis of the Global Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Mitigation Market, finds that the market earned revenue of $354.0 million in 2013 and is estimated to reach $929.5 million by 2018. The study covers physical network appliances, as well as subscriptions to cloud-based scrubbing services.

The evolving nature of DDoS attacks is a double-edged sword that generates demand for DDoS mitigation services, while challenging vendors to create complete, effective and affordable products. Vendors must invest in research and development to update their solutions and provide consistent value to help customers manage risks.

"With the importance of internet access and web services in businesses increasing, high volume network-based attacks, combined with application-layer attacks, represent an effective threat against any online business," said Frost & Sullivan Network Security Senior Industry Analyst Chris Rodriguez. "This escalation in application-layer attacks will require solution providers to offer hybrid platforms combining high-performance on-premise and high capacity cloud-based systems."

Collaborations among vendors with complementary products will enable both partners to deliver comprehensive and seamless DDoS protection. In addition, mergers and acquisitions are strategies vendors will likely employ to complete their portfolios.

"Solution providers should also look for avenues to make DDoS mitigation accessible in terms of both price-performance and usability," advised Rodriguez. "For instance, creating open standards for technologies such as cloud-signaling will improve interoperability and reduce development costs, in turn enhancing profitability in the global market."
