FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Aug. 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- On Monday, Jameel McCline will put on his boxing gloves and take to the streets in his 20th Congressional District to show his constituents literally how hard he will fight for them after he KO's his opponent, Congressman Alcee Hastings, in Tuesday's Democratic primary.
In full boxing regalia, the 6'7", 260-pound McCline will step into the much larger public ring to show how hard he will fight to put people to work in his job-depressed district. The hard-driving Congressional challenger will show off the zeal, energy and boxing skills that made him a heavyweight champ and let Hastings know that he's in for the fight of his political life.
McCline's route to victory will cover one-mile long stretches in the most densely populated neighborhood of his District. Along the way, he will jog like a champion training for what will be the bout of his life with his opponent, the 77-year-old, gray-bearded, well-entrenched Democrat incumbent.
"I want to show people what a powerful representative I will be and how hard I'll fight for them in Washington for jobs and for economic equality in my hard-pressed district, which hasn't had a fighter for a long time," says McCline. "And when I'm up there, I'll break up some of those clinches that are clogging up the works and preventing the people's representatives from acting in the interest of those who sent them there."
McCline has been campaigning hard in Florida's 20th District— a predominantly Democrat and black district where poverty and unemployment are rampant. In the closing days of the race, he has gone on television and radio shows promising to fight harder for people in his district than Hastings ever did.
During his pro boxing career starting in the mid-1990s and ending in 2012, McCline fought all four of the major heavyweight championships. He stood in against a hard-punching giant—7'0", 300-pound Russian champion Nikolay Valuev—for the WBA title. He stepped up to 6'7", 240-pound Wladimir Klitschko, the current WBO, IBF and WBA champion. He even fought one of his best friends, Chris Byrd. But the fight McCline, 44, wants most to win is Tuesday's bout against Hastings.
