The various location-enabled mobile devices are smartphones, tablets, PNDs, and location-enabled in-dash devices fitted in vehicles. LBS is used for discovering places and routes, tracking, obtaining traffic updates and real-time directions, routes to landmarks, information regarding ongoing local events, finding friends, location-based advertising, location-based shopping, location-based social networking, and location-enabled searches. It is also used for location-based entertainment and infotainment.
The LBS market in India is segmented on the basis of application such as location-based Navigation and Tracking, Location-based Search and Advertising and Location-based Infotainment and Analytics. The different positioning technologies described in the report are GPS, A-GPS, Cell-ID Technology, and Angle of Arrival, Time of Arrival, and Wi-Fi.
In recent years, location-based search and advertising has been gaining momentum as the new advertising medium in India. Advertisers use the location of a cellphone user to send targeted advertising campaigns. According to the report the growth of the LBS market in India is driven by several factors. One of the main drivers in this market is the increased penetration of GPS-enabled smart devices. The number of users of location-enabled smart devices such as smartphones, tablets, and in-dash devices has been growing in recent years.
Further, the report states despite the presence of several drivers, the growth of the LBS market in India is curtailed by several challenges. One of the major challenges in the lack of awareness of LBS among consumers. Traditionally, the majority of consumers in India use their cellphones only for voice calls. Only a small section of users use their cellphones for data as well as voice, indeed most users use their cellphones only for reading or sending messages and making or receiving calls.
