Walter Energy Completes Sale of Blue Creek Coal Terminal

Company Sells Property at Port of Mobile to Alabama State Port Authority

BIRMINGHAM, AL -- (Marketwired) -- 08/25/14 -- Walter Energy, Inc. (NYSE: WLT), a leading, publicly traded "pure-play" producer of metallurgical coal for the global steel industry, has completed a previously announced transaction to sell the Blue Creek Terminal and associated properties, located in Mobile, Alabama, to the Alabama State Port Authority for $25 million.

"This was an important transaction for the Company," said Walt Scheller, Chief Executive Officer. "In addition to realizing value from the sale of a non-core asset, we've secured a throughput agreement that takes care of our export capacity needs for our Alabama mines."

As part of the transaction, the parties agreed to a long-term extension of the existing coal handling agreement that addresses both the Company's current and future export requirements. The Company currently exports approximately seven million tons of metallurgical coal through the Port Authority's McDuffie Coal Terminal in Mobile.
