ORLANDO, FL -- (Marketwired) -- 08/26/14 -- Red Giant Entertainment Inc. (OTC: REDG), an innovative Intellectual Property company specializing in high quality characters and content for use in a variety of media and entertainment, is thrilled to announce that legendary transmedia franchise architect Larry Hama is writing the Company's new MONSTER ISLE monthly series debuting this November.
Red Giant's MONSTER ISLE follows a group of teens who decide to investigate an abandoned amusement park in the bayou of Louisiana where they stumble upon a secret, unleashing monsters that only our young heroes can stop. "It's shaping up into an eerie, quirky take on the kaiju theme," said Hama. "The fun for me is coming up with outrageous supporting characters, bizarre situations, and slam-bang action sequences. Of course, nailing likeable and novel protagonists is a given, right?"
Hama may be best known for writing all 155 original issues of Hasbro's G.I. JOE: A REAL AMERICAN HERO comic book series for Marvel Comics from 1982 to 1994, introducing dozens of new characters in the process. USA TODAY called Hama "the man whose creative force turned the G.I. JOE toy line into a multimedia juggernaut." The live-action film series starring Channing Tatum, which Hama served as a creative consultant on and made a cameo appearance in as a general, grossed $673 million at the box office alone. A third installment is now in the works.
A favorite creation for Hama is BUCKY O'HARE, a sci-fi funny animal comic book that spawned an animated TV series, a toy line, a video game, and more. Ahead of his time, Hama built the property as a transmedia franchise at its inception. "I designed the toys first," said Hama. "That's why the comic characters have 3mm holes in their feet and have 3mm plugs on their belts. I wanted the comic and animated characters to be exactly the same as the toys with no compromise." Well-remembered by children of the '90s, a BUCKY O'HARE feature film is reportedly now in development.
At Marvel, Hama also had notable runs on WOLVERINE, ELEKTRA, and GENERATION X. More recently, Hama triumphantly returned to the characters that he made famous, writing a direct continuation of his original G.I. JOE series (right where he left off with at issue #156) for current publisher IDW. The most recent issue, #205, hit stores earlier this month.
"Larry Hama's writing is what hooked me on comics," said Red Giant CEO Benny Powell. "His G.I. JOE series was one of the few comics in history to be promoted using nationwide television commercials, and I was captivated by those outrageous animated ads, spurring me to pick up each monthly issue from a spinner rack in my local bookstore. I loved what I read, and I never stopped loving comics. To be working with Larry is a childhood dream come true."
