IRVINE, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 08/27/14 -- On August 28th General Contractor Swinerton Builders is celebrating the grand opening of the new Enclave at Costa Mesa Middle School. Swinerton started work on the project in December 2012. When classes begin in the fall of 2014, students will have a brand-new, state-of-the-art science building to learn in.
A 31,000-square-foot, two-story, Type-2 structure, the new science building is a huge upgrade from their previous facility. The $17-million building will have fifteen classrooms and four science labs, along with administration space and bathroom facilities. The largest classroom, the Exploring Technologies Center, has very high exposed ceilings and is to be used as a 30-station computer lab.
The building's complex exterior is composed of three different systems. It has a brick veneer front, set on top of plaster, which in turn is set on top of composite metal panels, featuring a waterproofing barrier system strong enough to withstand a Category-5 hurricane. On the outside of the building, there are several large garden planters for students to learn about horticulture. At the top of the building's front exterior, thin solar panels were rolled onto the slanted aluminum panels, creating 9kw of power to be used as a learning display for the students.
The building is targeting LEED Silver certification; sustainable construction practices were implemented by the Swinerton team, who managed the paperless jobsite through an onsite electronic plans table. BIM was utilized to check steel shop drawings and MEP coordination, while Total Station was used for surveying. The project was designed by HMC Architects and the Construction Manager was McCarthy Building Companies.
