BUDAPEST, Hungary, August 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
While the Hungarian government is concerned about the territorial integrity of Ukraine, in addition to fighting and a large number of victims among the civilians in Eastern Ukraine, there is another risk, which is a serious threat to a wider region, to Eastern Europe, including Hungary.
The representative of the Jobbik party, a member of the Hungarian Parliament, Lajos Kepli stated that there are hundreds of enterprises in the region affected by the conflict that may pose a great danger. Should these become a target in the course of military actions, they could lead to a significant environmental disaster. The list of those enterprises includes power plants, chemical plants, warehouses, hazardous substances and health institutions, where a large amount of radioactive isotopes, extremely dangerous to people and the environment, are stored and used.
The Jobbik Party is concerned by what it sees as the irresponsibility of the Ukrainian government through its punitive military action, organized by Kiev, which has led to numerous casualties among the civilian population and may lead to an environmental disaster. To avoid this, the international community must pay more attention to those institutions posing a potential danger.
The use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes should be controlled by the IAEA (The International Atomic Energy Agency) to prevent terrorists from getting fissionable material, the consequences of which are unpredictable. The Jobbik Party urges the Hungarian government to take decisive steps towards a peaceful settlement of the conflict to prevent environmental disaster.
